Patient Preparation
Ask if patient has any metal objects in
clothing ( zippers, buttons, snaps, etc.)
Any jewelry that might obscure the certain
areas of interest. ( navel rings)
Present patient with a gown to change
into.

Positioning
Patient
prone on the table
Rotate 35-40 with the right anterior
portion against table.
Place right arm down beside patient
Left arm flexed at elbow by patient’s
head to hold cup
Flex left knee for support
Shield patient at waist.
CR is perpendicular to T5-T6
About 3 inches below jugular notch
SID 40
Collimate about 6 inches wide.
Place marker in light field
Suspend breathing
Film critique
Esophagus
should fall between spine and
heart.
Esophagus should be filled with barium
Adequate rotation

is supine on the table.
Align stomach to midline of table.
Ensure body is not rotated.
Arms at side
Place shield over waist
CR perpendicular to L1
Mid-way between lower rib margin and Xiphoid tip
SID 40
Collimate to cassette and place marker in light field
Expiration
Different centering positions
for all positions
Sthenic
patient is at L1
Hypersthenic is 1 inch above L1
Asthenic is 2 inches below L1 and nearer
to mid-line

Diaphragm and lower lung fields
Fundus is filled with barium
Positioning of patient for LPO
Patient

Rotate 30-60 degrees from supine
depends on size of patient.
Flee knee for support
Extend left arm from body and raise right
arm across chest to hold to side of table
Place bottom of cassette or Light at the
top of the crest
Shield patient at waist.
Rotation for LPO UGI
Sthenic
45 degrees
Hypersthenic 60 degrees
Asthenic 30 degrees
CR midway between xiphoid tip and lower rib margin
mid-way between the midline and left lateral side.
