EDTPA - TEACHER PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
edTPA is a preservice assessment process that stems from a
twenty-five year history of developing performance based
assessments of teaching quality and effectiveness. The
Teacher Performance Assessment Consortium (Stanford and
the American Association of College for Teacher Education –
AACTE) acknowledges the National Board for Professional
Teaching Standards, the Interstate Teacher Assessment and
Support Consortium, and the Performance Assessment for
California Teachers for their pioneering work using discipline
–specific portfolio assessments to evaluate teaching quality.
EDTPA - TEACHER PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
edTPA reached across the aisle to various national subject
specific organizations such as; AAHPERD, ACEI, ACTFL, AMLE,
CEC, IRA, NAEYC, NAGC, NCSS, NCTE, NCTM, NSTA for their
content validation reviewers and to in short develop a
handbook with thoughtful input from over 600 teachers
from a variety of disciplines.

What is edTPA?
It is the new Performance Assessment portion of the teacher certification process in New York
state. It is a preservice assessment process designed to answer the question: “Is a new teacher
ready for the job?”

Why edTPA?
It is here to measure novice teachers’ readiness to teach K-12 performing arts. The assessment is
designed to focus on a student learning and principles from research and theory .

What type of evidence do we need to capture in order to show competency?
Artifacts and Commentaries that show clear evidence of how you planned, taught, and assessed
your lessons.
•
How much does it cost?
The $300 cost covers all edTPA assessment services.
•
Does it have multiple parts?
Yes, the test includes three tasks that each student must interact with; Planning for Instruction,
Instructing and Engaging Students in Learning, and Assessing Student Learning.
•
How will I be assessed?
Each student teacher will be assessed in relationship to the quality of their work submitted
compared to the agreed upon the subject area rubrics (1-15) provided within the edTPA
handbook.
