The History
of
Table Skirting
The history of table skirts seems to
consist of bits and pieces of information
as well as a great many educated
guesses about the origin of covering the
front of a table. Such seemingly
unrelated bits of information, some
without documentation, are difficult to
call a definitive history, yet evidence of
table skirts in the past does indicate
that the custom existed before the 20th
century.
• A table skirt is a great way to cover an
unsightly table, or provides a great storage
space solution for smaller items such as
books. A table skirt is like a table cloth, but it
covers the table entirely and hangs to the
floor so you can't see the legs of the table, or
anything that may be sitting underneath the
table. A table skirt can be loud and colorful,
or a subtle addition to your décor, but either
way can definitely add something to any
room in your home.
• Table skirting is just as the name implies—a skirt
for a table. Table skirts consist of two
components: the cloth table topper and a skirt
that fastens to the table edge with clips, Velcro
or snaps. Standard tablecloths are not sufficient
for over-sized banquet tables—they shift, wrinkle
and are rarely a proper fit. There is a table
skirting solution for any table and occasion.
Various table skirting designs are suitable for
wedding receptions, business conferences or
holiday celebrations. Learn about the different
kinds of table skirting and make your upcoming
event a stylish affair.
A kidney table is rounded,
often timed with an arc shape
similar to that of a human
kidney. Kidney table skirts are
designed to allow for this
unusual shape; skirting is
tapered to follow the design of
the table.
A box-pleated table skirt features
accordion folds in the drapery.
These folds provide a formal look
and such skirting is often utilized on
banquet and trade show tables.
STANDARD ROUND
A table skirt overlay is a square piece of
fabric that is layered on top of a standard
round table skirt. The overlay is typically
of a contrasting color and design than
the skirt below it and can even be layered
with a second overlay to provide a triple
layer effect.
A sink skirt is a
variation on a table skirt
used to cover the base
of a sink where the pipes
are exposed. Sink skirts
can vary in size and
design to accommodate
the space they will
occupy and can be used
in kitchens, bathrooms
and laundry rooms.

French box
pleat
skirting
Using French box pleats to skirt a
table make the table appear elegant.
These pleats are quite narrow thus
making the bottom of table
skirting to appear full.
Gathered
table skirting
This is a simple style in table skirting
and it is created by fabric drape being
drawn together by thread along the top
hem. Tight gathers give the table skirt
a full appearance.
Table
Detachable swags could be fitted on
business, party or banquet tables. These
swags can be placed on any kind of cloth
table skirting and they are clipped on
using overlap clips.
