AYSO Rules

  

Players

All eligible team members must play at least half of the game. Substitutions are allowed at the mid-point of each half, at half-time, and at the start of any overtime period; and for injury. Small sided games (fewer than 11vs 11) are permitted for all divisions; and strongly encouraged for younger players.

AYSO Rules

 

Coaches

Sideline participation by coaches is limited to comments that are positive, instructional, and/or encouraging. A maximum of two coaches is permitted for each team. Coaches must remain within the coaches’ area.

Newsletter for Referees

Referees must make decisions related to

games, applying knowledge, common sense and their wits. These decisions must always respect the letter of the law and embrace the spirit of the game. Test your knowledge and see if you can answer the following questions.”

 

Correct Decisions

The assistant referee should concentrate on players challenging for the ball so he can see potential fouls. The assistant referee should indicate offenses not seen by the referee or whenever he has a better view than the referee to see an offense.

 

Correct Decisions

The referee should keep a clear, unobstructed view of play, with a good angle of view. A good angle of view helps make correct decisions as well as determine whether contact is fair, careless, reckless, or done using excessive force. The referee should keep the assistant referee in view so he can see flag signals.

Correct Decisions

The referee should be close to play, without interfering with players or ball movement, to help him make correct and convincing decisions. When the referee is far from play it makes it easier for players and others to question his decisions.

AYSO National Referee Program

Refereeing Philosophy

The Laws of the Game are intended to provide that games should be played with as little interference as possible, and in this view it is the duty of the referee to penalize only deliberate breaches of the Law.

AYSO National Referee Program

Refereeing System?

The diagonal system of control is the only system for officiating outdoor soccer games that is currently recognized by FIFA. The diagonal system employs one referee and two assistant referees. The diagonal system of control (one referee on the field) is the approved method of control for all AYSO matches.
