Focal Areas
The Future of NWTF
Conservation Delivery
History of NWTF Conservation
Delivery
• Super Fund
– Proposal driven
– Largely opportunistic
• Trap and Transfer
– Focused on raising money to
move wild turkeys
• Regional Habitat Programs
– National projects funds divvied out
to states
• Regional Initiatives
– Focused on the needs of partners
– Largely funded by grants
A More Focused Future
Focal Regions
 Very large areas based
on ecosystems, bird
conservation regions,
etc.
 Aligned with other
National planning
efforts, will serve as
functional initiative
areas for NWTF
landscape scale efforts
Even More Focus
Focal Landscapes
Large important areas
defined by biological,
cultural or geographic
factors, not confined
by state boundaries
These areas will serve
as the basis for
regional conservation
delivery initiatives,
directed fundraising
campaigns and brand
awareness tools
Where the Rubber Hits the Road!
• Focal Areas
– 5,000 - 50,000 acres in
size
– Addressing specific
habitat needs for wild
turkeys
– Will serve as primary
conservation delivery,
fundraising leverage and
local marketing
destinations
So What’s Next?
 Identify focal landscapes and state specific focal areas
through state strategic planning process
 Provide a tremendous opportunity for directed fundraising
campaigns
 Formalize the NWTF role locally, statewide and regionally
 Provide volunteers and staff something to promote, brand
and market on a grassroots level
 Strategically aligns us to garner large private sponsorships,
grants, endowments and gifts for specific habitat delivery
What is your role as a volunteer?
 Engage in the state planning process
 Be familiar with the habitat work going on in your
areas
 Promote the work we do and focus on WHY it is
so important for wild turkeys, upland wildlife,
hunters, fishermen and in many cases water quality
and human lives
 Be creative and lead the effort to raise money
specific to our urgent habitat needs
