Bar Model Drawing Steps
1. Read the entire story
2. Underline the question
3. Write answer sentence (mmm statement)
4. Who is the story about? What is the story about?
5. Draw starting line and unit bar/bars
6. Read each sentence 1 at a time…
 Add information to drawing and check off sentence…
 Think about where to put the question mark (Part or Whole?)
7. Write the equation and solve
8. Write the answer in the blank
Jasmine has 11 books. Drew has 17 books. How many
books do they have together?
Dan has 19 pencils. He gives 7 pencils to Jim. How many
pencils does Dan have left?
There are 14 oranges in a basket. Mr. Goldberg puts 5
more oranges into the basket. How many oranges are
there now?
Scott bought 29 bananas. He ate 6 bananas. How many
bananas does Scott have now?
Hannah has 8 pieces of candy. Her mother gives her 4
more pieces. How many pieces of candy does Hannah
have now?
Kristen had 29 M&Ms. She gave 12 to her little sister. How
