Night of Watching
• • • Night after Passover has a name Leyl Shimerim – Night of Watching Back to the Exodus – Tie a lamb to your house for 4 days – Butcher it in front of everyone on Passover – Spread the blood on your door post – Listen as the Angel spreads death through Egyptians – Will the Angel pass by – will it work?
– What will the Egyptians do?! – Exodus 12:30

• Mark 14:33 – He took Peter, James, and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
– “Deeply distressed” literally means “sudden, shocking awareness” – “Troubled” means almost to the point of sheer terror • What happened?!

Cup – Elijah’s Cup
• • • • Cup set out for Elijah at every Passover Jeremiah 25:15 – “Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.” Psalm 79:6 – Pour out your wrath on the nations that do no acknowledge you Psalm 69:24 – Pour out your wrath on them; • The cup of God’s damnation!
Elijah’s Cup
• • • Should this be in the Passover?
The rabbis argued over it, but couldn’t decide They decided that when Elijah comes back he will tell them what to do with it.
Sudden, shocking awareness
• Jesus, in his humanness, realized it was for him! • • Mark 14:36 – “Take THIS cup from me.” Luke 22:44 – “And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his seat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” • “Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
• He drank it!
The Cup’s Empty
• • Mark 15:34 – “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?!” – God did not answer Jesus’ Tzeakah. John 19:30 – “IT IS FINISHED!” • It’s empty. Christ drank it all. There is nothing we can or need to do.
The Cup’s Empty
• Body of Christ rejoices!
• • • • • God will take us out of sin – Yes!
God will set us free from sinful nature – Yes!
God will redeem us from sin – Yes!
God will protect us from going back to sin – Yes!
Christ drank the punishment meant for us – YES!!
