ELECTROTECHNICAL UNIVERSITY “LETI”
DEPARTMENT OF BIOENGINEERING SYSTEMS
● ETU “LETI” is the oldest Electrotechnical University in Europe (it was founded in 1886)
● The radio inventor Alexander Popov was the first elected director of the University
● Professor Zhores I. Alferov, a graduate and the former Head of the ETU Optoelectronics
Department, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Herbert Kroemer (2000)
● Today about 9 000 students, including international students from different countries, study at
LETI simultaneously.
● Today the staff of LETI includes about 2300 people with more than 900 professors and PhDs,
20 laureates of national and international Prizes and 5 correspondent members of Russian
Academy of Science

The first department in the Soviet Union which started training in the field of biomedical
engineering
●
Currently one of the leading departments in the sphere of biomedical engineering in Russia
●
Today the staff includes 12 Professors and 7 Associate Professors
●
There are 3 levels of education: a Bachelor’s program – 4 years, 3 Master’s programs –
2 years, and a postgraduate program “Devices, systems and products for medical use”
●
Since 2014 a new English language master degree program “Bioengineering Systems and
Technologies for Prosthetics and Rehabilitation” has been available

● Extent of the Program:120 ECTS credits, duration: 2 years (full-time studies)
● Students get knowledge of prosthetics objects modeling and rehabilitation bioengineering
systems design. They get skills of practical work with modern technologies and systems for
disabled patient examination, ability of carrying out scientific research during the
development of new rehabilitation systems.
● The basis of the program was developed in 2006 as Tempus Joint Project #27097
“Developing capability in Orthotic and Prosthetic Education for the Russian Federation” in
close collaboration with the University of Salford
● The program is implemented in collaboration with the ETU “LETI” Department of Applied
Mechanics and Engineering Graphics
