Comparing Citrix Flash Technologies
Technology
Description
HDX
MediaStream
for Flash
(server-side
acceleration)
• Formerly called SpeedScreen Flash
• Server-side flash rendering and optimization
• Server-side Flash Player fetches and plays flash content
• Flash Player quality dynamically adjusted based on low bandwidth conditions
(XenApp only)
• ICA thinwire virtual channel transfers all graphic updates across wire
HDX
MediaStream
for Flash
(client-side
acceleration)
• New feature in XenApp 5 Feature Pack 2
• Client-side flash rendering and optimization
• Flash calls intercepted on server and transferred to client using new VC
• Client-side Flash Player downloads and plays flash content
• Citrix Online Plug-in places Flash Player over ICA session ensuring seamless
experience
Which flash technology is used for connections?
Client-side flash takes precedence over
server-side flash if both are configured
If conditions for client-side flash are not met,
fall back to server-side flash
Server-side flash requires Flash Player
enabled and configured on server
If conditions for server-side flash are not met,
no flash optimization is performed within ICA session
Conditions for using HDX MediaStream for Flash
• Client connection
• Citrix Online Plug-in 11.2 is used on client
• Latency between ICA Client and XA/XD is <50ms*
• Single-hop between client and virtual browser
(e.g. ClientVirtual DesktopPublished IE is not supported)
• GPO configuration (if used)
• GPO enables HDX Flash for the server and/or client
• GPO does not blacklist the URL for using HDX Flash
If any of these conditions are not met,
the connection falls back to server-side flash
HDX MediaStream for Flash

VM Hosted Apps
What is VMHosted Apps?
• Host and deliver applications from centralized workstations
• Applications run on Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7
• Compliment to current Terminal Server application delivery
VM Hosted Apps
Hosted virtual desktops,
VMs or blade PCs
Citrix Confidential - Do Not Distribute
What it’s Not…
• A replacement for Terminal Services
• A license to deliver virtual desktops via XenApp
• Delivery of virtual desktops will require a XenDesktop license
• A way to deliver multiple applications from one virtual machine
• One application per virtual workstation
• One user per virtual machine concurrently
VM Hosted Apps Use Cases
• Applications that are not supported on Terminal Services
• Legacy16-bit applications
• ISV not supporting apps on Terminal Services for
licensing reasons
• Apps that are only certified to run on a particular OS
• Applications that require special USB devices
scanners, digital signature pads, biometrics, etc
• Applications used by only a handful of users
• Applications that need to be distributed
to users fast, without a lot of
validation cycles
How Does it Work?
• Terminal Server hosted and
VM Hosted applications are
aggregated by Web Interface
• Can be delivered to most end point
devices: Windows, Linux, Mac, etc
TS Hosting
VM Hosting
• Consumes a XenApp
Enterprise or Platinum license
• XenDesktop Enterprise and Platinum customers receive a XenApp Enterprise
license for application virtualization and will be able to use this feature
VMHosted Apps End User Experience
• Application is
enumerated in
Start Menu or in
Web Interface site
• Application displays
in seamless window
Citrix Confidential - Do Not Distribute
Required Licensing
• XenApp ENT
or PLT licenses
are required for this feature
• Requires Subscription Advantage expiration date of Sept
18 , 2009 (2009.0918) or later in license file
• XenDesktop
licenses cannot
be used to display
applications only

Power and Capacity Management
What is Power and Capacity Management?
• Power management for XenApp servers
• Auto-power cycles servers with
idle capacity to reduce energy
consumption
• Load consolidation for XenApp servers
• Directs user sessions to particular servers in order to
consolidate sessions on fewer servers
The Basics of Power Management
• Without PCM…
•
•
•
•
• With PCM…
•
•
•
•
Session sprawl
Low and uneven server utilization
Over-provisioned capacity
Unnecessary power consumption
e.g. 65% unused capacity, 2 unnecessary servers
Sessions on fewer servers
Optimal server utilization
Just-in-time capacity
Reduced power consumption
e.g. 30% unused capacity, 0 unnecessary servers
Citrix Confidential - Do Not Distribute
What is Load Consolidation
• Loads user sessions on XenApp servers until the defined
session capacity is reached on that server
• Once session capacity is reached, servers are powered on
to support more capacity or powered off to reduce capacity
• Can disable logons to prevent users from starting new
sessions on the server
• Can be used to drain sessions from servers to take offline for
maintenance

capacity and
system state
PCM Management Console
• Manage, monitor, and configure PCM
•Acts on
commands
issued by the
concentrator
PCM Database
•SQL Database
w\ Reporting optional
•Stores PCM Farm info such
as server inventory, schedules,
configuration info, and data used
for reporting
PCM Concentrator
•Coordinates power on\off states for the
XenApp servers
Citrix Confidential - Do Not Distribute
XenApp Requirements
• Requires XenApp 5 for Windows
Server 2003
• Requires Feature Pack 2 and
HRP05 installed with the Autorun.msi
• PCM Agent installation will not complete
without Feature Pack2 and HRP05
XenApp Requirements
• XenApp Enterprise or
Platinum license
• Subscription Advantage
eligibility date of Sept 18, 2009
or later
• “Feature unlicensed" error will
appear PCM Console if all
licensing requirements are
not met

How it works
Automated Power Control
2. Online session buffer
set to 4.
5. Server 2 now comes online and
ready to accept connections.
3. User 1 logs in. Next server does
not power on. Limit not yet
reached.
4. User 2 logs in. Server starts
to power on because limit has
been breached.
Citrix Confidential - Do Not Distribute
1. Sessions capacity: Max
number of sessions a server
can take
Limitations
• Currently only supports Wake on LAN for physical server
• All physical machines to be powered on must exist on the same subnet
• Recommendation is to virtualize on XenServer instead of
using physical servers
• Cannot shut down XenServer host machine with PCM
• Must use Workflow Studio to shut down or power on host XenServer
