Load Testing Services
Load Testing Services
“How many users can I get on a box?”
“How will my applications behave?”
“How many servers do I need?”
EdgeSight for Load Testing 3.6
New Features
• Xen Counters
• More counters for testing XenApp
on XenServer
• Intelligent Load Control
• Adjusting load based on test
performance
Xen Counters
• New performance counters
• XenServer performance metrics
• XenApp performance metrics
• Functionality
• Added like prior counters
• Displayed in charts
• Different Icon
Intelligent Load Control
• Probing of “break point”
• Not like typical testing where goal is to
quickly find breaking point
• Gives a better understanding of what is
happening at that point
• Based on selected metric
• Activates once threshold is met
• Reactivates on reset threshold
Web Interface 5.2
Web Interface 5.2
• Required for presentation of VM Hosted Apps
• Strongly recommended for
integration of XenApp and
XenDesktop resources
• Can upgrade from
WI 4.0 and higher
• Supports:
• XenApp 4.0 or higher
• XenApp for UNIX 4.0 or higher
• XenDesktop 2.0 or higher
Web Interface MMC
• Administered by MMC 3.0
32-bit snap-in (no longer
in DSC/AMC)
• Automatically removes WI
extension in AMC/DSC if exists
on that server
• Installed by default
• No option for not installing
• Accessed by means of
WIAdmin.msc

Configuring Two STAs
• Requires Access Gateway Standard or Advanced edition
version 4.6.1 or higher
• Enterprise Edition in 2010
• Configuration:
• CSG_EnableSessionReliability
and CSG_UseTwoTickets set to ON
(default is OFF)
• Causes WI to use a newer version of the STA XML protocol
for this functionality

Power & Capacity
Management

Module 6
What is Power and Capacity Management?
• Power management for XenApp servers
• Auto-power cycles servers with
idle capacity to reduce energy
consumption
• Load consolidation for XenApp servers
• Directs user sessions to particular servers in order to
consolidate sessions on fewer servers
The Basics of Power Management
• Without PCM…
•
•
•
•
• With PCM…
•
•
•
•
Session sprawl
Low and uneven server utilization
Over-provisioned capacity
Unnecessary power consumption
e.g. 65% unused capacity, 2 unnecessary servers
Sessions on fewer servers
Optimal server utilization
Just-in-time capacity
Reduced power consumption
e.g. 30% unused capacity, 0 unnecessary servers
Citrix Confidential - Do Not Distribute
What is Load Consolidation
• Loads user sessions on XenApp servers until the defined
session capacity is reached on that server
• Once session capacity is reached, servers are powered on
to support more capacity or powered off to reduce capacity
• Can disable logons to prevent users from starting new
sessions on the server
• Can be used to drain sessions from servers to take offline for
maintenance

Power and Capacity Management Features
Features
Features
• Load consolidation
• Real-time monitoring
• User sessions are automatically
consolidated to fewer servers
• Power management
• Define specific times for powering
on and powering off servers
• Manual override for settings to
accommodate sudden changes
• Reporting
• Physical and virtual server
support
• Wake-on-LAN for physical servers

Power and Capacity Management Architecture
XenApp Servers
PCM Agent
•Reports
XenApp
session
capacity and
system state
PCM Management Console
• Manage, monitor, and configure PCM
•Acts on
commands
issued by the
concentrator
PCM Database
•SQL Database
w\ Reporting optional
•Stores PCM Farm info such
as server inventory, schedules,
configuration info, and data used
for reporting
PCM Concentrator
•Coordinates power on\off states for the
XenApp servers
Citrix Confidential - Do Not Distribute
XenApp Requirements
• Requires XenApp 5 for Windows
Server 2003
• Requires Feature Pack 2 and
HRP05 installed with the Autorun.msi
• PCM Agent installation will not complete
without Feature Pack2 and HRP05
PCM Console
• Communicates with Concentrator
for PCM Farm configuration
• Console can be installed on
a XenApp server, separate
server or Workstation
• Must be logged in locally with
account that has administrator
access to Concentrator machine
to run the PCM Console
• MMC 3.0 snap-in
Concentrator
PCM Concentrator Configuration
High Availability
• Built-in Cluster
management capabilities
• Supports up to 2 Concentrator Clusters
• Master – Slave relationship
• Share the same PCM database
Concentrator
(Master)
• If Master looses database
connectivity, slave takes over

How it works
Automated Power Control
2. Online session buffer
set to 4.
5. Server 2 now comes online and
ready to accept connections.
3. User 1 logs in. Next server does
not power on. Limit not yet
reached.
4. User 2 logs in. Server starts
to power on because limit has
been breached.
