Strategy for Growing the Work
Site Planning Time
People do not naturally resist change; they
resist change they do not understand, the
value of which they do not see, or the
demands of which they cannot meet.
Change the Way You Lead Change, Herold and Fedor
(2008)
(Thursday, Group 3)
My students can’t… (my student’s won’t) ACTUALLY means:
I do not want to change my teaching style because I’ve been
doing this for years. I don’t know how… , The students
don’t do it like I think they should and I know the right way.
SOLUTION/RESPONSE:
1) Vent which will get to the details 2) then come watch me
demo. When we say it then hold up mirror. Ask Questions –
why do you think that? This is works for me and in my class.
Build a PLC and focus on process not product then you have
more permission to try.
(Tuesday, Group 2)
“My Kids can’t…” actually means:
I can’t…, I don’t have the tools or the strategies to get the
student to where I’d like them to be, I’m afraid of failing, I am
missing some foundational skills, I’m not ready, I can’t see how I
will get these students to the places they (CCSS
standards/methodology) want me to go.
SOLUTIONS/RESPONSES:
Just try one thing/baby step, listen to your students because
they like it, celebrate every success even the smallest one, go
observe somebody, go to a CCSS training
(Monday Group 1)
THEY CAN’T Actually means:
I’m afraid of change, I haven’t scaffolded,
I’m afraid of failing, Missing resources
I am not sure how
WE CAN SAY:
What have you done that is working?
What small step can you take toward…?
How can I help you?
It takes time…
Be solution-based, not deficit-based
