 Describe the colonial era with emphasis on the
development of an economy based on agriculture,
commerce, and handicraft manufacturing; and
the emergence of major regional differences in
the colonies
Objective
 The goal of this lesson is that students should
understand which states comprised the 13 colonies and
in which region they are classified to. They should also
understand the economy and climate of the regions
and the reason they were founded.

 Immigrate- To move to a foreign region or country.
 Cash Crop- These are crops that are to be sold.

 Founded in Plymouth by a group of English Protestants
also known as the Puritans.
 Climate- Harsh with short growing season and bitterly
cold winters.
 Most families lived by subsistence farming.
 Benefited from products of the sea and forest.
 Reason they founded was for religious freedom.

The Middle Colonies
 The Dutch founded New Netherlands which was later
renamed New York City by the English
 William Penn was a Quaker (Protestant Sect) that
taught all people are equal.
 Climate- Milder, longer growing season and more
fertile soil then New England
 Reason colonies were founded was to expand trade and
also religious and political freedom

 Had many skilled workers that produced fine goods
like shoes, candles, fabrics, clocks and glassware
 Had multiple large cities that many Europeans
immigrated to.
 Had much larger farms then those in New England
