The Hawthorne Studies: 1924, Harvard business professor Elton Mayo; Western Electric Company plant in Hawthorne, Illinois – a study of the effect of lighting levels on productivity  surprising results :  “increased attention and interaction with supervisors led to greater productivity” became known as the Hawthorne effect.

McGregor (1960) simply relabeled and regrouped theories as seen in practice.

Ouchi (1981) described the unique Japanese approach and called it Theory X. Employees participate to a greater degree in policy making. The expression “Quality Circles” describe a technique of employee input.
