What does the research say?

THE RESULTS OF SEVERAL STUDIES INDICATED THAT
MIDDLE LEVEL GRADES 6, 7, AND 8 OBTAINED HIGHER
ACHIEVEMENT IN K–8 SCHOOLS THAN IN SCHOOLS
WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL CONFIGURATIONS .

STUDENTS IN K-8 SCHOOLS SHOW HIGHER SELF
ESTEEM, LESS VICTIMIZATION BY OTHER STUDENTS,
GREATER LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION IN
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, AND HEALTHIER
ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT.

HIGHER GPA IN NINTH GRADE BY APPROXIMATELY

Benefits of K-8 Centers
What does the research say?
 Students who left elementary schools for middle schools in grades
six or seven “lose ground in both reading and math compared to
their peers who attend K–8 schools”

Florida students who entered middle school in sixth grade were 1.4
percentage points more likely than their K–8 peers to drop out of
high school by 10th grade — a whopping increase of 18 percent.
 In our school, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are not “caught in
the middle.” They are the role models for the entire student body.
Sheridan students assume early leadership responsibilities. The
result is greater confidence and self esteem, and a sense of
belonging

Expectations
 Sixth graders are new to middle school, and the tasks
expected of them are different from those of
elementary school.
 While elementary school focuses on the student, and
high school solidifies his skills, middle school is
when your child will decide how important education
is to him.
 Middle school lessons will not simply teach facts —
they will also teach how these facts carry over into
real life.
 Tasks will focus more on interpretation rather than
rote memorization.
