Lesson 1
Addition & Subtraction of Fractions
Lines & Segments
To add or subtract fractions that have the
same denominators, add or subtract the
numerators and record the result over the
same denominator.
If the denominators are not the same, it is
necessary to find an LCD and rewrite the
fractions over the same denominator.
A mixed number is the sum of a whole
number and a fraction. When we add or
subtract mixed numbers we handle the
fractions and the whole numbers separately.
Lines & Segments
A mathematical line is a straight line
that has no width & no depth.
A part of a line is called a line segment.
A line segment contains the endpoints
and all the points between the
endpoints.
Ex. 1.1
10/11 - 5/6 + 1/3
Ex. 1.2 Segment AC is 10¼ units. Segment AB
measures 4 3/7 units. Find BC.
