Poetry
Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience
expressed through meaning, sound, and
rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an
emotional response. Poetry has been known to
employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no
means necessary. Poetry is an ancient form that
has gone through numerous and drastic
reinvention over time. The very nature of poetry
as an authentic and individual mode of
expression makes it nearly impossible to define.
Couplet
Two-lined poems with a fun and simple
rhyming pattern. Each line has the
same number of syllables and their
endings must rhyme with one
another. Humor is often used in
couplets.
Examples
• Little Daddy Longlegs played in the sun,
Climbing up the front steps just for fun.
• Tomorrow's my birthday and I'll be four
And I won't have to stay home anymore.
• Nature puts on little shows
Every time it rains or snows.
• Look at all the pumpkin faces
Lighting up so many places.
Haiku
• Haiku is a Japanese poem with no rhyme.
Haiku poems have only three lines, each
with a certain number of syllables. Here is
the pattern:
• Line 1 = 5 syllables
Line 2 = 7 syllables
Line 3 = 5 syllables
Examples
• Nature Haiku
Green grass in April
Birds begin to sing in trees
Children playing outside

• Butterflies hatch.

Bees fly everywhere.

Tanka Poem
• A form of Japanese poetry that depends on the
number of lines and syllables instead of rhyme.
The pattern is:
• Line 1 = 5 syllables
Line 2 = 7 syllables
Line 3 = 5 syllables
Line 4 = 7 syllables
Line 5 = 7 syllables
Examples
• Saying Goodbye
Carefully I walk
Trying so hard to be brave
They all see my fear
Dark glasses cover their eyes
As mine flow over with tears
Cont……
The moonlight's shining
On the gardenia bush
But all blossoms gone;
Yet in my mind's eye appear
The ravishing white visions.

Abstract Art is similar to the way
poetry better describes thoughts
or the way music helps to convey
an emotion.
It develops from an
original source.
