Response to Intervention: A Systematic Problem Solving Process

Rhode Island RTI Initiative Module One 2007

Goals of This Module

1. To develop awareness of the five essential components of a systematic problem solving process: Response To Intervention (RTI) and how they relate to national and state initiatives.

2. To consider and discuss with your colleagues what you already have in place that is a part of systemic problem solving process to effectively implement RTI. 3. To develop next steps for RTI in your school and district as part of your school improvement plan.

Why RTI?

Think about a student (or group of students) who was difficult to teach... And you ended up being successful.

1. Who was the student(s)?

3. What did you do?

2. What was the problem?

4. How do you know you were successful?

Nationally

• Early and Preventative Intervention • Three-tier models of Literacy and Positive Behavior Supports • Formative assessment • Response to Intervention • NCLB, 2000 • IDEA, 2004

RTI Defined

“RTI is the practice of providing high quality instruction matched to students needs and using rate of learning over time to make important educational decisions.” National Association of State Directors of Special Education (2005).

Building Capacity: Beginning with a Goal in Mind

Collaborative engagement includes:

•Being data driven in an effort to help every student succeed •Making a commitment to do whatever it takes when they acquiring evidence that suggest particular students aren’t succeeding •Studying about and use best practice in their repertoire of daily teaching strategies •Examining curriculum, instruction and assessment across grade levels and subject areas to assure students’ continuous learning experiences.

•Celebrating success •Learning from one another •Problem solving together •Engaging in learning about learning as a daily activity.

RTI: A Systematic Problem Solving Approach

If a student isn’t performing as expected, we will change what WE’RE doing …

and continue problem solving until we find what works.

5. Plan Evaluation

What is problem-solving?

A decision making process

1. Problem Identification 2. Problem Analysis 4. Plan Implementation Revise Modify Intensify With Expanding Support 3. Plan Development

1. Problem Identification

What is the discrepancy between what is expected and what is occurring?

Why is the problem occurring?

2. Problem Analysis

What is the goal?

What is the intervention plan?

How will progress be monitored?

3. Plan Development

4. Plan Implementation

How will implementation fidelity be ensured?

Did the student(s) respond to the intervention?

5. Plan Evaluation

CELEBRATE?

REVISE?

MODIFY?

INTENSIFY?

WITH EXPANDED SUPPORT?

5. Plan Evaluation

Intensive Interventions

1. Problem Identification 2. Problem Analysis 4. Plan Implementation Revise Modify Intensify With Expanding Support 3. Plan Development

This process takes…

1. A shared responsibility 2. A school-wide intervention system 3. Assessment Data: Screening and Progress Monitoring

RTI

Policy • Personal Literacy Plans/Programs – Problem Solving Approach – Circles of Support – Benchmark and Progress Monitoring Assessment – Interventions • Learning Disabilities Guidance – RTI • Secondary Reform
