Resume Preparation The Purpose of a Resume • A resume is the bait that gets you in the door for an interview. • no interview = no chance of getting the job! Importance of a Resume • Employers generally spend 10 seconds scanning a single resume. Resume First Impression • First contact with the employer. • Resume tells employer what type of employee you are and the work you will produce. • Critical to describe qualifications clearly 4 Common Resume Formats • Chronological – Highlights your work experience • Functional – Highlights skills and accomplishments rather than work experience. 5 Example Resume Design DO: • Thousands of examples • Organized • Easy to read • Professional DON’T: • Overcrowd • Use landscape • Use too many bells and whistles Design Suggestions • Black ink only. • One-sided. • Plain white or cream paper. • Slightly heavier weight than regular copy paper. 8 Resume Sections Here are some of the most common resume components: • Personal Contact Information • Summary of Qualifications • Work Experience/Job History • Educational Background/Military Experience • Professional References 9 Personal Contact Info • Phone – WORKING with a voice mail that you check • Address – Lets them know where you are located • Email – Professional NOT: [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected] Qualifications A Summary of Qualifications highlights the most relevant skills, accomplishments and experiences that meet the employer’s needs. 11 Work Experience • Chronological order beginning with your most recent employer. • Should include: – Job title – Name of company – Location (city, state) – Duration of employment (month and year) – Brief description of duties and responsibilities 12 12 Education • List the most recent school first and include this information: ‒Name of the School or Institution ‒Type of Degree or Diploma received 13 13 Military Service • Work Experience section. • Summary of Qualifications section. • Education 14 14 References • Included or Separate • Do not include the statement, “References available upon request.” • Type of reference 15 15 EXAMPLE EXAMPLE Questions?
