GRUP Platform
Introduction
Global competition is increasingly fierce
• Attract international students
• Recruit world-class scholars
• Seek funding & donations globally
• Carry out international collaborations
• ….
• Build global reputation
Needs for globally comparable information
• What are the strength and weakness for universities in
different countries?
• What is the gap/difference between my university and
world-leading research universities?
• If we aim for top 500/100 in the world, what should we
do?
• ……
Global Rankings are Helpful
• Academic Ranking of World Universities (2003-)
• THE World University Rankings (2004-2009, 2010-)
• QS World University Rankings (2004- )
• Webmetrics Ranking (2004-)
• Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World
Universities (2007-)
• University Ranking By Academic Performance (2010-)
• ……
Limitations of Global Rankings
• Most rankings only publish league tables
• Only a limited number of attributes can be observed
• Other limitations: e.g. Non-performance indicators are
neglected
• ……
