A virtual catalogue for UK music libraries
Marian Hogg, Project Administrator
EUUG Conference, Madrid 2000
MLO - What is it?
a virtual union catalogue for music, using
Z39.50
provides simultaneous access to the
holdings of music library catalogues
throughout the UK
provides an alternative to the physical union
catalogue
MLO
a pilot project
CRITERIA
FOR-SECONDARY
PARTNERS
funded by the UK Higher Education sector
one of several pilot projects using Z39.50
the only subject virtual union catalogue
funded in this way
exploring the possibilities of Z39.50 for a
specialist library community

Z39.50 standard
Z39.50 has been implemented
differently in different systems
different implementations cause
problems with record retrieval
need to develop a profile tailored to
specific search requirements
Mapping exercises
SECONDARY PARTNERS
Z39.50 attributes are mapped to MARC
fields of individual databases
2 processes - search and display:
Search - local servers need to be
configured
Display - set of rules to determine
which part of the MARC record
displays
Search and Retrieval of Music
Music bibliographic records demand
sophisticated search and retrieval
Cannot rely on Author, Title, Subject search
Data elements within standard music
bibliographic record for which there was no
Z39.50 attributes
Successful in adding these data elements to
the international Z39.50 profile
EXAMPLES OF MUSIC SEARCHES
BIBLIOGRAPHIC
STANDARDS
songs by British composers written after 1945
19th century songs for high voice
chamber music for flute, harp and violin
arrangements of the classics for saxophone
recordings conducted by Sir Simon Rattle
orchestral parts for Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring
Bibliographic Standards
Need for consistent cataloguing and
indexing between databases
different uses of MARC (UKMARC,
USMARC and others)
local interpretations of AACR2 (AngloAmerican Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed.)
Bibliographic Standards (2)
Bibliographic Standards Working Group:
compiled matrix of all variations in
cataloguing practice
developed Core Bibliographic Record
developing rules to determine consistent
display
Interface
Currently using VDX software
modifications based on search/ display
requirements
interface includes details of collections and
partner libraries
Collection Level Descriptions
brief descriptions of a library collection
Subject strengths and material types
(eg. orchestral sets) to be searchable
includes special collections with brief
descriptions of coverage
metadata to allow user to pre-select
catalogues to search
includes material not catalogued online
to give overview of library holdings
Benefits of using Z39.50
Allows search of structured data
can be used to interrogate any library
system
can, to a certain extent, be configured
to accommodate different uses of
MARC
New catalogues added with little extra
cost
catalogues can be searched “live”
Problems in using Z39.50
Different implementation can cause
problems with interoperability
precise searching not possible while
differences exist
needs more conformity between
databases
Development of Profiles
Work currently being done on national
and international level to develop
Z39.50 Profile - the Bath Profile
Sirsi implementing the Bath Profile into
their products
Profile essential to more precise
search and retrieval
Inter-Library
Lending
COLLECTION
LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS
potential of ILL as added online service
current practice uses BLDSC for
management of ILL’s
BLDSC do not have music collection
catalogued online
alternative service may not be beneficial to
the music library community at present
ILL service being piloted as part of Riding
project
Benefits for the library community
 a UK project, with world wide access
 collection descriptions hold
information of special collections
unavailable elsewhere
 more libraries should join in the
future, creating a wider UK union
catalogue
