Australia has been called “the land of differences” and “the
continent of contrast”. Nature variety in Australia is
immense. Over the vast area are rain forests, trackless
deserts, open forests and pastoral plains, lowlands and
highlands.
The first thing most people think of are the strange
“unusual” native animals.
The Platypus
The platypus is a duckbilled furry and an egg-laying
mammal. Even though the platypus is a mammal it lays
eggs like a bird. It gives milk to its young. Its fur is like a
beaver’s. The platypus breaks all biological rules. When
the skin of one of them was first sent to England some
scientists said that no such animal could possibly exist.
The Koala
The Koala is sometimes called a teddy bear but it is not
really a bear. Koalas resemble Kangaroos, because they
carry their babies in a pouch. Later the progenies ride on
their mother’s back. These animals live in the eucalyptus
trees and like to hang upside down in trees. Koalas eat
eucalyptus leaves and roots. They never drink water.
The Kangaroo
Australia is the native home of
kangaroos. The smallest kangaroo,
a wallaby, is as big as a rabbit. The largest kangaroo is
over 7 feet tall.
Kangaroos carry their babies in pouches. They have
strong hind legs and powerful tails which help them to
leap along.
The kangaroo is
represented on the
Australian coat
of arms.
The Dingo
The Dingo is the wild dog of Australia. It is the only killer
among the native animals. Dingoes don’t bark very often,
they howl instead. These dogs hunt alone or in groups.
They eat small kangaroos and sheep. You can meet
them in many parts of Australia but most of them live in
mountains and hills.
Birds
The birds are as unusual and as fascinating as the
animals. There are over 700 species of birds in Australia,
both resident and visitors.
The Emu
The most interesting is the flightless Emu, who can run
at speed of 60 kilometres per hour. The Emu is the next
– tallest bird in the world after the ostrich. The Emu is
also represented on the Australian coat of arms.
Reptiles
In Australia you can see some species of snakes,
lizards, turtles, freshwater and saltwater crocodiles. The
saltwater crocodile is very dangerous to men.
