Fuel System – Operation
The fuel system is fairly straight forward.
Once the engine is running, the system is
controlled automatically except for takeoff
and landing.
Normal – Boost pump system is turned to
“MAN” or manual, for start. Once the
engine is running, the boost pump switch is
set to “AUTO”. In manual both left and right
pumps are on.
Auto – In the auto mode, the fuel system
draws from both left and right tanks.
Should it detect an imbalance of 25 lbs or
more for more than 5 seconds, it illuminates
the annunciator
and turn on the
boost pump for the heavier side until
balance is restored.
Should imbalance reaches 40 lbs for more
than 60 seconds, the annunciator will
FLASH.
The system will continue
to run the “heavy” side boost pump until
balance is restored. Maximum imbalance is
125lbs.
Fuel Pressure – Should the system detect a
drop in output from the low pressure engine
driven pump, the
Illuminates and the system will
activate both boost pumps.
The low fuel annunciator will
com on when the fuel totalizer drops below
100 pounds of fuel remaining.

Fuel System – Operation
Fuel management information is derived from the fuel flow transducer, the
navigational data from the GPS system and processed through the DAU to calculate
fuel information displayed on the MFD.
To enable operations in cold environments, the fuel system incorporates a heating
process utilizing engine oil and a heat exchanger. Whenever fuel temperature drops
below 21°C, engine oil passes through the heat exchanger until fuel temperature is
above 32°C. Excess fuel is then returned to outboard left and right tanks. This slows
the cooling process of fuel enabling operations at temperatures as cold as -54°C for
longer periods.
Fuel Filtration: fuel from the high pressure pump passes through a fuel filter prior
to reaching the fuel nozzles. The fuel strainer must be cleaned every 100 hours of
operations and/or after prolonged down times. If the filter becomes clogged, a bypass
valve opens, illuminating the
annunciator and enabling unfiltered fuel to
go to the nozzles. Operating with unfiltered fuel could contaminate the fuel system
leading to eng failure.
Float switches: Each boost pump has a float switch to disable the boost pump
when there is less than 2.5 gallons of fuel remaining in the header pump to prevent
cavitations and keep air out of the fuel system.

170 gallons / 1140 pounds usable
Anti-Icing additive is required (Prist)
See Pratt & Whitney SB for specifications
Maximum allowable fuel inbalance
125 gallons
Venting of Fuel Tanks
NACA type vents on each main tank
Fuel Annunciator
– 25lb or greater imbalance (amber)
– Boost pump is on (green)
– flashing 40 lbs or greater imbalance (amber-flashing)
– low pressure pump below 9 PSIG, L/R boosts will come on
– filter clogged and being bypassed (amber)
Float Switches
Disables a tank electric boost pump when there is less then 2.5 gallons of fuel in the
associated header tank to prevent air from getting into the fuel system.
