Vulcan Chem-Rings

Background We have over 28 years experience with these products Closely collaborated with a number of US manufacturers over many years In addition to utilising in our Mechanical Seals we became a huge re-seller Vulcan were at one time the largest European distributor

Background Size of the market has been estimated at $80 million Controlled by a handful of US manufacturers Production process is closely guarded by these manufacturers

Background Traditional manufacturers have not been responsive to market demands Lead times are long and they are not prepared to hold stocks to meet customer service demands Production process is highly labour intensive

Background Labour intensive and demanding production process.

This results in; High production costs High staff turnover Constant re-training Possible quality/consistency problems

Opportunity Until recently only one non-US manufacturer has emerged They are now US owned They face the high cost of UK production and similar staff problems There has long been a massive opportunity for a manufacturer who can produce high quality products with lower labour costs .

Opportunity Vulcan purchased a majority stake in one of the smaller US manufacturers High volume production plant now fully operational in our seal factories in China Vulcan can now offer exceptionally high quality products at the world’s most competitive prices

2. STANDARD KEY CHECKS - ALL SEAL GROUPS -

[Tick boxes on completion  ]  Check

INNER CORE

material is correct to code. Ie. FV = FEP Viton FS = FEP Silicon   Check for

AIR GAPS

between the core and the encapsulation. Check separation in vulcanized elastomer core join area. Permissible gap of up to 10% of o-ring cross section, only if filled with bonding agent. See picture 1   Check for visible stress crack or pinhole in encapsulation. Automatic rejection. See picture 2 Check for foreign particles on inner core material. Permissible particle size of up to 5% of o-ring cross section. See picture 3. Check for blooming. Automatic rejection. See picture 4. Check for carbon deposit imbedded in encapsulation. Automatic rejection. See picture 5. Check for wrinkled encapsulation. Automatic rejection. See picture 6. Check for check the surface finish for marks. Please note, there may be a scratch near the join area, this is the “bleed line”, and will not effect the performance of the seal.

3A. SPECIAL CHECKS – MANUAL INSPECTION DETAILS -

[Tick boxes on completion  ]

INSIDE DIAMETER

–  Touch the inside surface of the o-ring with the jaws of the vernier, without gripping or exerting pressure on the ring. Record the reading at this point.   Repeat this procedure twice more at 60 DEG angles to the original position. Take an average of the 3 readings to obtain the internal diameter.

CROSS SECTIONAL THICKNESS

–  the vernier.  Close the jaws of the vernier around the o-ring cross section until just holding the o-ring, not squeezing it. When unsupported, the ring should fall from the jaws of Take a reading in the horizontal plain, and then in the vertical plain, at the same point on the ring.   Take an average of the 2 readings and check to the required cross-section tolerance. Measurements are taken at the join area, immediately to either side of the join area, and at a point opposite the weld area.  What is important, is that the average cross-section does not fall below the minimum tolerance specified.(overleaf)  The accepted Industry standard tolerance for encapsulated o-rings for both ID and cross-section is taken as

TWICE

the BS 1806 tolerance.  However,

Q –GRADE

o-rings are produced to suit BS 1806 tolerance.

Quality Inspection

Quality Manufacture Competitor manufacturers did not publish their production tolerances They worked to double the AS 568 moulded O-Ring tolerances They would not even certify these Vulcan Key Inspection Sheets fully detail our production tolerances

Quality Manufacture Uniquely in the industry we can offer seals produced to published close tolerances in two different grades Q Grade Produced in line with AS 568 tolerances Vulcan were the first to offer this Bleed Line Free Standard As Q Grade but produced with a special moulding process to ensure an improved finish and consistent section in the weld area

Quality Manufacture High Technology Status ISO 9001 Approved Modern facilities and plant Increasingly automated production Rigorous, electronic, certified inspection All product labelled with batch number and cure date for traceability Only manufacturer to share key inspection sheets with customers

Quality Distribution Electronic, integrated stock control system Automated system controls all aspects From ordering and inspecting raw material to highlighting product position on stock carousel when picking orders Eight computer controlled stock carousels now fully operational in our worldwide distribution centre in Sheffield

Quality Distribution

Quality Distribution Bar-coding of product labels Scanned on to stock as received Scanned again at despatch Eliminates error – right first time Labels carry product details, batch number & cure date UPS delivery allows order tracking

Why Choose FEP Encapsulated O-Rings?

They combine the energising properties of elastomers with Teflon's® superior resistance to extreme temperatures and hostile chemicals.

They overcome the cold-flow problems associated with solid PTFE rings They provide a cost efficient alternative to expensive perfluoroelastomer rings
