A collection of computers and devices connected together via communications devices and transmission media
Local Area Network (LAN)
A network that connects computers in a limited geographic area, such as a school lab, or office
Wide Area Network (WAN)
A network that covers a large geographical area, such as one that connects the district offices of a national corporation
Internet
World’s largest network Worldwide collection of networks that connects millions of businesses government agencies educational institutions individuals
What do people use the Internet for?

Internet Service Provider (ISP) An organization that supplies connections to the Internet for a monthly fee Comcast AT&T Earthlink

Segment of the Internet that contains billions of Web pages
Web Page
Document containing text, graphics, audio, and video that can be accessed through a web browser Web site: A related collection of Web pages Web browser: Software program used to access and view Web pages Uniform Resource Locator (URL) A web page’s unique address

Search Engine
a computer program that retrieves documents from a computer network Google, Bing, Cha Cha

to receive data to a local system from a remote system
