Background
• GTP is specified and deployed for 3GPP
release 99
• 3GPP is looking for ways to incorporate
Mobile IP into their protocol framework
• Mobile IP ad hoc study group has
recommended inclusion for new 3GPP
release
• We should try to encourage this
development
Main Motivation
• GTP should be allowable as a Mobile IP
tunneling mechanism
• GTP should become a Proposed Standard
– satisfies criteria of interoperability
– any changes from working group would be
submitted to 3GPP
