Family Math Night
Count Me In!
Milling to Music
3rd grade parents inside circle
4th grade parents outside circle
Move around in a circle –
Something new that their children learned so far this year in
math
Something that they like about the new math
Something that is different from the way you learned math
Why are we changing?
How The Common Core State Standards are
Helping us change our Instruction
Focus, Coherence, and Rigor
Balance of concepts and skills
Content standards require both conceptual understand and
procedural fluency.
Mathematical Practices
Focus on key topics at each grade level.
Coherent progression across grade levels.
Foster reasoning and sense-making in mathematics.
College and career readiness
Level is ambitious but achievable.
Priorities in mathematics
Grade
Expectations of Fluency and Conceptual
Understandings
K-2
Addition and subtraction, place value,
measurement using whole number quantities
3-5
Multiplication and division of whole numbers and
fractions, measurement
6-8
Ratios and proportional reasoning, arithmetic of
rational numbers, expressions and equations
Smarter Balanced Assessment
A system of valid, reliable and fair assessments aligned to
the Common Core State Standards
Administered in English language arts/literacy and
mathematics for Grades 3-8 and 11
Use computer adaptive testing technologies
Provide meaningful feedback that teachers can use to help
students succeed

Critical Areas – Grade 3
developing understanding of multiplication and
division and strategies for multiplication and division
within 100
developing understanding of fractions, especially unit
fractions (fractions with numerator 1)
developing understanding of the structure of
rectangular arrays and of area
describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes
Critical Areas – Grade 4
developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit
multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing
to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends
developing an understanding of fraction equivalence,
addition and subtraction of fractions with like
denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole
numbers
understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and
classified based on their properties, such as having parallel
sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and
symmetry
The Goal
Students will develop a deep understanding of math
concepts and be able to apply it to new situations.
Students will develop the ability to reason, problem solve,
and make decisions based on their understanding of
number.
Students will develop a variety of strategies to solve
problems.
What do addition subtraction look like now?
What do multiplication and division look
like now?
What’s Most Important?
WE need to ensure that each students has a
solid understanding of numbers and
what we do with them.
Students need to be able to think and talk deeply about
numbers
Students need to have a variety of strategies when working
with numbers
Students need to be fluent when working with numbers
Play Some Games with Your Children!
Ask them how they figured it out
Watch them use different strategies with different games
Notice the tools they use, and how they help them to
understand numbers
Have fun!
