Friday, July 17, 2015 AYSO REGION 1447 54 Goal Safety The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported 26 deaths and hundreds of injuries since 1979 resulting from soccer goal accidents. Securely anchoring the bottom and back of portable goals is the most important step we can take to prevent soccer goal injuries. While most injuries come from children climbing on top of improperly secured goals, injuries have occurred when goals have tipped over in high winds or when goals are being set-up or taken down. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruCqQB8N23E Friday, July 17, 2015 AYSO REGION 1447 55 Goal Safety These guidelines should be followed to ensure the safety of our players: 1. Goals should be anchored with 2-4 stakes per goal (number and size dependent on goal size and design and type of ground). Sandbags can be substituted if the ground/surface necessitates. 2. Referees should check the anchoring of the goal as part of their safety inspection of the field prior to each match. Do not start the game until the problem has been addressed. 3. If used for practice, the coach should ensure the goal is properly anchored per CPSC Guidelines. Do not start practice until the problem has been addressed. 4. When not in use, goals should be stored and locked in a manner that would prevent them from falling. 5. No climbing or hanging on goals.
