The structure of a story
The order in which a writer chooses to present their story
can help readers to understand the writer’s purpose and
always adds to the overall effect of the text.
The narrative structure of most stories is as follows:
opening – development – complication – crisis – resolution

Openings
When you start a novel or short story, try to figure out
what type of hook the writer is using.
Which hook is this author employing?
When Farmer Oak smiled, the corners of his mouth
spread until they were within an unimportant
distance from his ears, his eyes were reduced to
chinks, and diverging wrinkles appeared around
them, extending upon his countenance like the rays
in a rudimentary sketch of the rising sun.
Why do you think that the author has chosen to use
this hook? Do you think it is an effective one?
