Knowledge Development, Technical Assistance,
and Leadership
Overview of the National AIM Center
Activities in Three Areas:
• Knowledge Development
• Leadership
• Technical Assistance
Knowledge Development
• Identify and document current approaches
used by SEAs and LEAs for developing and
implementing efficient, unified distribution
systems for the delivery of AIM
• Survey 1 conducted in the summer of 2010:
Status of State Systems for the Provision
of AIM and NIMAS in 2010
http://aim.cast.org/learn/policy/stateresources/statestatus2010
A Few Snippets from the 2010 Report
• Only 33% reported serving students based on
need rather than just qualification for an
exemption from copyright under Chafee
• 63% indicate that AIM data is being collected
• But only 33% reported tracking timely delivery
• Fewer than 20% reported collaborating with
parent information centers or an agency
responsible for AT
• 90% reported offering training and resources
to support the timely delivery of AIM
Knowledge Development
• Describe the necessary components of a
coordinated system for the distribution of AIM
to students whose disabilities prevent the
effective use of print-based instructional
materials
Quality Indicators for the Provision of AIM

Market Initiatives
• The Irony of Progress
• More digital content but inaccessible from the
start (locked up ePUB, poor HTML, PDF, etc.)
• ePUB3 is promising if made accessible
• The Opportunity
• New publications, web sites, eLearning platforms
and content, software and hardware “should” be
accessible directly from the markets
• Mandate: DOJ and OCR
• See http://aim.cast.org/learn/policy/federal/ocr
• Need from SEAs and LEAs: Demand
Leadership
• Communicate and collaborate with currently
funded OSEP projects, including—
• The NIMAC, Bookshare, RFB&D, the NIMAS
Center, and
• The Technical Assistance Coordination Center
(TACC)
• Communicate and collaborate with postsecondary groups
• PSC, AHEAD, Access Text Network, etc.
• University-based teacher preparation programs
Leadership
• Coordinate with the National Dissemination
Center (NDC) for individuals with disabilities
to develop a dissemination strategy
• Participated in OSEP’s Technical Assistance
and Dissemination (TA&D) Network activities
• Establish and maintain an advisory committee
• External evaluation: formative & summative
• External Review Panel: 3+2 Evaluation
