First Generation
The Vacuum Tube Age
(1951-57)
1951-Dr. John W. Mauchly and J. Presper
Eckert Jr. introduce the UNIVAC, the first
commercially available electronic digital computer
Computers were built with Vacuum tubes
-electronic tubes that were made out of glass and were about the size of
light bulbs

 1952- Dr. Grace Hopper introduces the A6 Compiler,
the first example of software that converts high-level
language symbols into instructions that a computer
can execute
 1951-1953- IBM adds computers to its business
equipment products and sells over 1,000 IBM 650
systems
 1957- Introduction of first high-level programming
language-FORTRAN (FORmula TRANslator)
Second Gener
ation
The Transistor Age
(1958-63)
This generation began with the first
computers built with transistors, small
devices that transfer electronic signals across
a resistor
- these new computers were faster, smaller
and more reliable than the first generation

transistors-a 1947 Bell Laboratories invention
1959- Introduction of the removable disk pack
and General Electric Corporation introduces
ERMA
1964- IBM introduces its system/360 line of
compatible computers, which can all use the
same programs and peripherals

language, and the Digital Equipment
Corporation introduces the first
minicomputer
1969- Introduction of ARPANET and the
beginning of the Internet!!!!!
Fourth Generation
The Microprocessor Age
(1970-1979)
 1970- Introduction of computers built with chips that
used LSI (large-scale integration)
 1975- The MITS, Inc., Altair becomes the first
commercially successful microcomputer, selling for
less than $400 a kit
 1977- Apple introduces the easy to use “hobbyist”
computer
 1979- Introduction of the first public information
services-Compuserve and the Source
Fifth Generation
The Age of Connectivity
(1980-present)
 1980-IBM asks Bill Gates to develop an operating
system
 1981- Introduction of the IBM PC, which contains an
Intel microprocessor chip and Microsoft’s MS-DOS
operating system
 1984- Apple introduces the Macintosh Computer,
with a easy-to-use graphical user interface
 1985-Microsoft introduces its Windows graphical
user interface

1991- Release of the World Wide Web
standards that describe the framework of
linking documents on different computers
1992- Apple introduces the Newton Message
Pad, a personal digital assistant (PDA) that
incorporates a pen interface and wireless
communication

 1995- Intel begins shipping the Pentium Pro
microprocessor
 1995- Microsoft releases Windows 95
 1996 More than 50 million PCs sold and more thsn
250 million PCs in use worldwide
 1998- Microsoft releases Office 98 integrated with
Internet Explorer 4.0
 1999- First virus is released which infects over 1
million computers, that uses Outlook contacts to send
itself via e-mail

 2000- Napster is prohibited from traded copyrighted
music on its site
 2001- Microsoft releases Windows XP and Office XP
 2003- Apple opens the iTunes music store with over
700,000 songs that users can buy and download for
$.99
 2005- Wireless connections to the internet(WiFi)
allow the public to to access the internet at airports,
hotels and many cafes
