KIC Innoenergy:
The European energy landscape
in the 2020 time frame
EEC Katowice May 15 2012
KIC Innoenergy and the European energy
landscape in the 2020 time frame
• To set the scene for the panel discussion on
“Development of the European energy landscape
from and industrial and university perspective”
and
“KIC InnoEnergy as a driver of innovation in
energy technologies in the 2020 perspective”
• Outlining
• KIC Innoenergy
• European Strategic Energy Technology Plan
• Horizon 2020
EEC, 2012-05-15 | Dr. M Callavik
What is KIC Innoenergy
• The knowledge & innovation community (KIC) focused on energy
in the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT)
• A new output-oriented innovation engine aligned with European
Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-plan) and societal changes
complementing other R&D and innovation instruments
• Integrating the business, education and R&D knowledge triangle
• A company run as a company with 29 shareholders from industry,
university and research institutes (~ 1/3 each) from 8 countries
co-funding activities

European Strategic Energy Technology Plan
(SET-Plan)
• Establishes an energy technology policy for Europe
• A strategic plan to accelerate the development and
deployment of cost-effective low carbon technologies
• Cover actions relating to planning, implementation, resources
& international cooperation in the field of energy technology
• Seven Energy Industrial Initiatives were established 2009:

Horizon 2020 – The EU Framework Programme for
Research and Innovations 2014-2020
• Commission proposal for a €80B research &
innovation funding programme, tbd 2013
• A single programme bringing together three
separate initiatives:
• 7th Research Framework Programme (FP7),
• Innovation aspects of Competitiveness and
Innovation Framework Programme (CIP),
• EU contribution to the European Institute of
Innovation and Technology (EIT)
• Coupling research to innovation
• Focus on societal challenges such as health,
food, clean energy and transport
• Simplified access for all

EEC, 2012-05-15 | Dr. M Callavik
Horizon 2020 in brief continued
• Three priorities:
1. Excellent science
2. Industrial leadership
3. Societal challenges
• KIC Innoenergy is in with line these key objectives and
a part of the programme
• EIT part of the proposed €80B is €2.8B
• Present 3 KICs and potentially 3 + 3 new ones
EEC, 2012-05-15 | Dr. M Callavik
What is needed to fulfill the scenarios?
EDUCATION
• Academia that attract the best
and foster top level engineers and
researcher
INNOVATION
• Good cooperation between
industry and academia to raise
intra- and entrepreneurs and
creation of new business
R&D
• Outstanding experimental and
simulation facilities coupled to
R&D and Demonstration arenas
= the knowledge triangle
