Reminders Purpose FLKRS Part 1 FLKRS Overview FLKRS Part 2 K-2 Electronic Scoring Tool (EST) Overview Wrap Up Questions & Answers 2 What’s New? For the 2012-13 FLKRS Administration • FLKRS should be administered August 08 – September 20, 2012 • For some English Language Learners, the FAIR-K may not be an appropriate instrument. However, unless English Language Learners arrived in the United States in the last 30 days and have sufficient difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language, they should be screened. • Monitoring features have been added to the Progress Monitoring and Reporting Network (PMRN) for School Districts to track the level of completion by their schools. 3 What’s New? For the 2012-13 FLKRS Administration • Open 30 Day Window – Teachers will have open access to the PMRN for 30 instructional days. All scores will be automatically saved by system on the 30th day. • Public schools who do not use the Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading – K (FAIR-K) for progress monitoring ONLY need to administer the Early Childhood Observation System™ (ECHOS™) and the Broad Screen of the FAIR-K. 4 Reminders For the 2012-13 FLKRS Administration • Public schools are now required to administer the FLKRS (FAIR-K and ECHOS) online. • Non-public schools may now administer both portions of the FLKRS. • FLKRS Kits will be sent directly to districts and non-public schools. 5 Purpose Why do we screen kindergarteners? To comply with Section 1002.69(1), Florida Statutes, (F.S.) the Florida Department of Education is required to establish a kindergarten readiness screening based upon the performance standards adopted by the department. 6 Purpose Who should be screened? All kindergarten students Each child who was enrolled in the VPK Education program - Section 1002.69(1)&(4), F.S. 7 Purpose Who may administer the kindergarten screening? Each public school is required to administer a kindergarten readiness screening to all kindergarten students in the school district within the first 30 school days of each school year. Non-public schools may administer the statewide kindergarten screening to each kindergarten student who was enrolled in the VPK Education Program (in the previous school year). - Section 1002.69(1), F.S. 8 Purpose How will FLKRS data be used? To inform instruction To provide parents with useful information about their child’s readiness for kindergarten To annually calculate a readiness rate for non-public and public school providers of the VPK Education Program - Section 1002.69(2)&(5), F.S. 9 Part 1 FLKRS Overview 10 FLKRS Overview What are the components of FLKRS? Teachers observe students to determine what they know and are able to do and record their observations (on the FLKRS Class Record Form). 36 FLKRS/ECHOS™ Overview Administration Requirements ECHOS™ should be completed by a teacher, trained in its administration. Kindergarten teachers may NOT administer the ECHOS™ to students they taught in VPK. 37 FLKRS/ECHOS™ Overview Frequency of Demonstration The behaviors and skills prescribed in each benchmark need to be observed only once for the appropriate indicator to be entered. 38 FLKRS/ECHOS™ Overview Planning for Observations Teachers should remember the behaviors and skills they want to observe Teachers should observe the behaviors in context Incidental observations Planned observations 39 FLKRS/ECHOS™ Overview Planning for Observations With careful planning, it is easily possible to complete FLKRS/ECHOS™ for a class of students within the first 30 school days, using various types of class activities. Whole Class Large Group Small Group Individual 40 FLKRS/ECHOS™ Overview Planning for Observations Get organized to record observations Optional Materials FLKRS Class Record Form Note cards Sticky notes/Mailing labels 41 FLKRS/ECHOS™ Overview Domain/Benchmark/Indicators Item 1: Concepts of Print Knows how to use a book A. Shows curiosity about all aspects of print B. Identifies front and back of book and where story begins C. Recognizes that the purpose of print is to tell the story 42 FLKRS/ECHOS™ Overview Suggested Classroom Activities Item 14: Production, Distribution and Consumption Explores the kinds of work that people do and how that work benefits family and community. Whole Class - The teacher asks questions following a story about community helpers and records each student’s response. Small Group or Individual - The students may dictate a story to accompany a picture they’ve drawn about community helpers. 43 Part 2 K-2 Electronic Scoring Tool (EST) Overview 44 FLKRS/K-2 EST Overview Technical Requirements Software Requirements are: • Internet Explorer 6.0 or later (Windows platform only) • Safari 2.0 or later (preferred for Mac users) • Mozilla Firefox version 1.5 or later (Mac or PC) • Flash Player 9.0 or later • JavaScript and Cookies enabled Hardware Requirements are: Minimum PC Mac Recommended Intel® Pentium® II 450MHz processor, 128MB of RAM, Screen Resolution of 1024 x 600 Intel® Pentium® III 1GHz or faster processor, 512MB of RAM, Screen Resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher Intel Core™ Duo 1.33GHz processor PowerPC® G3 500MHz processor 128MB of RAM, Screen Resolution of 1024 x 600 Intel Core™ Duo 1.83GHz or faster processor; PowerPC® G4 1GHz or faster processor 128MB of RAM, Screen Resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher 45 FLKRS/K-2 EST Overview Technical Support PMRN Help Desk (850) 644-0931 1-866-471-5019 [email protected] www.fcrr.org/pmrn/ 46 FLKRS/K-2 EST Overview Security • The K-2 Application is a secure site that uses the same encryption as a financial institution. • An automatic timeout will occur if there is no activity for 20 minutes. • The site’s security settings can be confirmed by the appearance of a padlock icon in the address bar (Internet Explorer), in the browser’s footer (Firefox), and a padlock icon in the top right of the browser (Safari).
