situations.

your community.

us.
Welcome
• Welcome and thank you for participating in
this life-saving project.
• The purpose of this training is to learn and
teach each other more about the child
passenger safety, and using child restraint
systems properly and consistently.
Madrinas and Padrinos
• At the end of this module you
will all graduate as Madrinas
and Padrinos of Traffic Safety
(Child Passenger Safety).
Madrina-Padrino
• The Madrina-Padrino concept is very clear.
• As Madrinas or Padrinos (Godparents) we
promise to take responsibility for our
Godchild in every way in the event that the
child’s parents are no longer in their lives.
• Madrinas and Padrinos of Traffic Safety
promise to take responsibility for the safety
of their loved ones (regarding traffic safety)
when there is lack of TS knowledge.
Madrina-Padrino
• Do you consider child passenger safety a
problem in your community?
• Have you ever heard of a child who was
injured or killed because they were not
restrained?
Purpose: Proper Use of Child Restraint
Systems (Car Seats)
• Why do you think it’s important to use child
passenger seats?
• If you have a loved one who doesn’t use a
child passenger seat for their child, what do
you think is the reason why?
Questions & Comments
• Why should I use a car seat for my child?
I’m a good driver. Nothing bad will happen
to me.
Fact: If involved in a collision, a child may
be ejected from the car.
• Why do so many Latinos fail to use safety
belts or restrain their children in car seats?
A common response is, “they’re too
uncomfortable.”
Continued
• The leading cause of death for Latinos ages
1 to 24 years of age is motor vehicle
crashes.
• Many Latinos and increasingly more
Latinas think that it’s not cool to use safety
belts.
• Safety belt use (including for the use of car
seats) is mandatory by law.
Car Seats for Children
• All children need a child passenger seat,
booster seat, or be fastened with a safety
belt.
• Using a safety belt for two people, even
children, could result in serious injury or
death in the event of a crash.
• Individuals not wearing a safety belt can
be ejected from the car resulting in
serious injury or death.
• NEVER sit or carry a child on your legs!
Types of Car Seats

Laws Governing Child Restraint Systems
A child under 5 years old and less than 36
inches tall must ride in a child safety seat.
Q: What is the fine for a violation?
A: Range from $100-$200 plus court costs.
Q: Who should use a Booster Seat?
A: A child that weighs more than 40lbs or
taller than 40 in. in height (This is the
recommendation).
• All Child Restraint Systems, including
those with federal approval, DON’T fit all
cars.
• The most common misuse errors are:
-Safety belt not holding seat in tightly.
-Harness straps not snug.
-Harness retainer clips not at armpit level.
-Harness straps not routed correctly.
• Go to www.nhtsa.dot.gov for more
information on federal laws for the use of

Mom and Two Boys Hurt in
Crash
An entire family was hurt in a crash, and troopers said the driver who caused the
wreck was drunk, News 4 WOAI learned. Tuesday night, the mother involved in the
crash told News 4 WOAI what happened to her. Lucinda Badillo and her two boys
were pulling into their dirt driveway near Poteet Saturday when her car was hit, she
said.
The other driver, 30-year-old Juan Castro, was drunk and speeding when he hit the
family’s car, state troopers said.
The airbags in Lucinda’s car deployed, knocking her unconscious.
Lucinda’s two young sons were not wearing seatbelts, and they were seriously
injured. Badillo’s leg was trapped, but she was worried about her 11-month-old. He
was badly hurt.
“I had to take my leg out and jump out of the window to get to him because he wasn't
breathing,” Badillo said.
The two children were airlifted to San Antonio-area hospitals.
Castro was facing intoxication assault charges Tuesday, officials said. News 4 WOAI
contacted Castro about whether he had been drinking, and he did not comment.
Skit
• What are the barriers that keep the
family from being properly
restrained?
• What would the family have to give
up so that all the children are
properly restrained?
• What could they have done
differently?
• What were the consequences that
followed the car crash
