What makes us Human?

How are we different from other mammals?

Objective

 Provided the use of student notes and student text, SWBAT explain early human development; identify important changes in human life that occurred during Neolithic Age; and explain the impact and effects of the Neolithic agricultural revolution by completing a primary source reading, completing the accompanied questions, and making a comparison chart of both the Paleolithic and Neolithic ages.

What Makes Us Human?

Culture

 The life ways of a group, including behaviors, objects, ideas, religion, passed down from generation to generation.

Language

 The ability to communicate both written and verbally.

Ability to reason

- Higher level of thinking. 

Empathy -

 to identify with and understand another person ’ s feelings or difficulties.

Paleolithic Period

    Greek for “old Stone” the earliest period in a cultural development.

Lasted from approximately one million years ago to 10,000 BCE.

 Considered Hunter-gathers.

Nomads:

Never settled in one place & followed their food.

 Art: Cave Paintings, sculpture made of mammoth Ivory, animal horns & animal bones.

 Making and controlling fire.

 Acquiring language.

 Developing religious & magical beliefs (honor when burying dead).

 Evolution of the Human species from an apelike creature to true Homo Sapiens.

What can this art tell us about early humans?

Ending of the Paleolithic Period

 Fire and the use of tools made it possible for humans to spread beyond Africa.  By 12,000 B.C.E., human societies spread to Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and Australia.  While most human societies at the end of the Paleolithic period migrated in pursuit of game, some groups were more sedentary.

 More stable groups began the switch from hunter-gatherer to Farmer.

Hominid Nomad -

Humans and other creatures that walk upright.

Paleolithic Age (Old Stone) -

Greek for “old Stone” the earliest period in a cultural development.

Never settled in one place & followed their food.

Neolithic Revolution –

The switch early humans made from hunter-gatherer to an agrarian society.

Agrarian –

Based on agriculture

Domestication –

to tame (an animal), to live in close association with human beings as a pet or work animal.

Civilization -

an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached.

Polytheism –

belief in more than one god.

Neolithic Period

    Greek for “New Stone Age” also referred to as the

Neolithic Revolution

Started around 10,000 BCE lasting to approximately 3100 BCE.

Humans started

domesticating

food. animals and plants for  They were transitioning from a hunter-gatherer society to an

agrarian

community. Domesticated animals improved the supplies of available protein, provided hides and wool for clothing.

Neolithic Period Continued

 Humans began to use new methods in farming.

Slash & Burn:

cut trees or grasses and burned them to clear a field. Ashes then fertilized the soil.  Humans began to build permanent settlements while some were still nomadic.  Began to use clay pottery, woven baskets for storing, transporting, & cooking food.  Art: Wall paintings, sculpture, and introduction of pottery and clay.

took place at different times in different parts of the world.  The rate at which people and cultures evolved was based on different crops and different environments, and what materials were available.  Unlike the Paleolithic Age when more than one human species existed the only human species that reached the Neolithic period were

Homo Sapiens.

civilization

Civilization

 To cultivate more land and produce extra crops ancient people in larger villages built elaborate irrigation systems.

 People began to pursue other jobs and acquire new skills.

 The wheel and sail were invented, which made it possible for traders to move goods over longer distances.  Social classes began to form.  Religious beliefs began to shift from a belief centered around nature and animal spirits to some belief of an afterlife and belief in more than one god

Paleolithic VS Neolithic

 In your groups please use your text and class notes to fill in this chart.   You will have 20 minutes to complete this task. After you have completed your chart, please have a member of your group write one fact on the board for each era.

   In the Sims game you have to maintain the health and attitude of you Sim in order to survive.

You also need to create and build their home, and in later versions of the game you are in charge of maintaining multiple homes in the town. What are the most important things you need to consider in the game to be successful, and to have your Sim and Sim neighborhood prosper?

 Provided the use of student notes and student text, SWBAT explain early the aspects of civilization; identify important changes in human life that occurred during Neolithic Age; and explain the impact and effects of the Neolithic agricultural revolution by participating in a “survival of the village” simulation game.

Survival of the Village!

      You and your group have just stumbled upon a piece of land you would like to make your own. It is up to you to survive!

You have been given a handout with a map of a large area as well as what natural resources can be found.

Please follow all directions as I go through them.

We will take this simulation one step at a time, and I will tell you when to move onto step 2. All decisions you make are worth points, but you can also lose them by making the WRONG one.

Step 1- Your Home

   Please decide if you and your tribe will remain nomad, or settle the land and build an agrarian society. Place a tent if you are nomadic of where you will set up to stay awhile. Place a Hut if you have chosen to settle the land.  10 Points- Hut next to water    8 Points- Hut next to mountains 4 Points- Tent next to water or mountains 2 Points- Hut or tent is in the middle.   If you scored 8-10 points please pick out of Step 1-Destiny Jar 1.

Step 2 - Food

      You are starving!!!!!

There are natural resources you can use on the land you settled. There are animals, and all types of fruits and veggies. The number to the right of the symbol is the quantity you have of that item. What will you do with your resources?

Write a plan of how you will use them. Remember each person will use one a resource a day, and we are playing for 20 days.   10 points – Eat some and plant a farm and domesticate the animals. 8 points- Eat some and plant a farm or domesticate animals.   4 points- Eat.

2 points- Starve.

Step 3- Daily Life

    Everything is going pretty well, but many of your tribe has become upset that there is no leader, or someone to give them direction and no laws to keep the peace. Eboo has stolen all the antelope meat from Igbee’s home. What will you do to keep the peace?

Please write a plan on how you will deal with the incident, and what you will do to keep the peace in the future.

  You need organize and delegate responsibility to your villagers.

 You have stumbled across a mixture of goat blood and sand. You know that it sticks to surfaces very well.  What do you do with this mixture?

    Please tally your points. 0-29 – Your village has survived for a short amount of time, you are eventually taken over by neighboring tribes. 30-49 – You have survived, but are not a strong civilization. You people will eventually die out or be taken over. 50-56 – You are an ultimate leader. You have made the correct choices and your civilization flourishes into an EMPIRE!
