Cavalier Battalion Hosts the
DHS Annual Raider & Drill Meet
On Saturday October 18th Dorman Cavalier Battalion hosted the
annual Fall Classic Raider Challenge and Drill Competition at the
Dorman Freshman Campus. This year saw 13 regional high schools
participate, the largest group in the history of this competition.
Newcomers this year were from Grovetown GA, Lugoff-Elgin,
Blythewood, Indian Land, and Westside. The Raider competition
was hotly contested as Pickens HS edged out perennial power
Liberty HS for first place. Dorman
finished in 4th place, only two
points from winning a medal.
The Raider team competed in all
five events, which included the
Modified PT Test, One Mile Run,
Commanders Event, 5K Run, and
and rope bridge. For this year’s Drill competition, the Cavalier Guard
only participated in Color Guard, and regulation squad drills because it
is very young team. Over 20 members of the Cav Guard are freshman
or sophomores. The Color Guard and drilling squads performed well,
finishing in the middle of the pack. The Drill portion also included an
individual “knockout” session . For only $1, Cadets could participate
for a chance at being the individual drill champ. Local Drill Sergeants,
Army Recruiters, National Guardsmen and Wofford Cadets were there
to serve as graders and evaluators. Although Dorman did not win a
trophy at this event, it was a fun it was a fun event for our teams and
Cadets who supported it. Our Raider and
Drill teams gained valuable experience in
the competition. Blythewood HS won
overall Best Drill Team, including several
individual drill categories .

Walhalla Rifle Meet
On Saturday October 4th the annual rifle meet
was held at Walhalla High School. Thirty-two
high schools participate in this all day event.
Each rifle team consists of four cadets. Dorman
took two young rifle teams to Walhalla. The
competition consists of firing at targets from
three firing positions: prone, standing, and
kneeling. There are both individual and team
scores in the match. Our Dorman Rifle A team
placed 16th out of 32. The Rifle B team placed
20th out of 32 teams. This was our rifle team’s
first meet. Shannon
Stewart, Harrison
Turnage, Anthony
Hammond, and Jason
Howard make up the
Dorman A team.
The B team consists of Jordan Sourbeck,
Michael McDonough, Logan Owenby, and
Austin Patton. Great start for our CAV Rifles!
2014 SC Upstate Homeless Veteran Stand Down
On October 10th, 2014, forty of our cadets volunteered at the annual SC
Upstate Homeless Veteran Stand Down. Local businesses and volunteers spent
all day providing homeless veterans with free meals, haircut, health and dental
assistance, showers sleeping bags, and various clothing items. Hundreds of homeless veterans attended
Upstate Stand Down and received assistance. To kickoff the event, the Cavalier Color Guard and two
other JROTC programs presented the colors. All of our cadets were actively supporting and continuously
working during their time at the Spartanburg Expo Center. Some of our cadets
personally escorted the veterans through the clothing issue line, carried the
veterans’ belongings to their vehicles and helped venders give away their
merchandise. The cadets also served veterans a free meal and talked with
them about their service in the military. At the end of the event, each cadet
helped clean up and organize remaining items.

company together to receive rewards and get
promotions. Overall, 179 cadets received awards
or promotions. Of those 179 cadets, 73 were
freshman cadets and 48 were upperclassmen
As a battalion, 58 cadets received awards for community service and student government. Six
freshman cadets were chosen by their instructor to receive the best cadet award. Those six
freshman were Johnny Jardon, Veronica Sarin, Aaron Chen, Aaron Hines, Zykia Brewton, and
Tianna Wright.
As part of the event, C/LTC Middleton presented the Upstate
Wounded Warrior Project with a $1,000 check from our JROTC
fundraiser Road March in September. To show their company
motivation, cadets sounded off with their unit mottos in a spirited
company competition. It was great! Congratulations to those
cadets who received promotions and awards! Continue to maintain
a positive attitude and works towards your next promotion.

as fun snacks. The 2014 Fall Classic Raider and Drill Meet event was successful
and well organized thanks to the dedicated work of the Cavalier Cadre and
Cadets. We received several accolades on the beauty of our campus and overall
management of the competition. Thanks to all of those who supported the Fall Classic.
