Ladders
Aims
To ensure students are familiar
with the terminology associated
with ladders and their safe usage.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the session students will be
able to:
• Recognise and use the standard terminology in
relation to ladders
• Describe the construction of a range of fire
service ladders
• State the varying uses of fire service ladders
• Understand of the safety procedures to be
adopted when using ladders.
Types of ladders in use
• Short extension ladder
(JCDD 32)
• 10.5m ladder
(JCDD 10)
• 13.5m ladder
(JCDD 12)
• Roof ladder
(JCDD 31).
Types of ladders in use
• All Humberside Fire Brigade ladders are of
aluminium construction
• Comply with Joint Council of Design and
Development (JCDD) specifications
• Regularly tested
• For these reasons fire brigade personnel are
instructed that they must not use ladders gained
from other sources.

Extend to lower - to clear the pawls
Heel in / Heel out
House - to retract an extending section
Pitch - to erect a ladder against a building
Slip - to remove a ladder from an
appliance.
