Adopt-A-Stream
Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program
Sign up for a free workshop to learn how to monitor sections of
streams, rivers, lakes or wetlands for nonpoint source pollution.
These workshops teach people to become stewards of their local
watershed by:
Increasing public awareness of nonpoint source pollution near
their homes and water quality issues
Providing citizens with the tools and training to evaluate and
protect their local waterways
Encouraging partnerships between citizens and their local
government
Collecting baseline water quality data from local streams on air
and water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and conductivity
Some of the major nonpoint pollutants deposited in our water ways
are:
Sediment from soil erosion caused from uncontrolled
construction activities and enlarged stream banks
Oil and grease from automotive leaks and spills on paved
surfaces or improper disposal of used oil in storm drains
Pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer runoff from lawns, gardens,
farms and golf courses or from improper disposal
Metals and compounds found in vehicle exhaust, weathered
paint, and tire residue
Organic contaminants from litter, organic matter, sludge and
garbage from dumpsters and garbage cans, pet and livestock
wastes
Excessive nutrients from sewer leaks and septic tanks.
Milton Grows Green is currently working on a Milton-specific pilot
program at Hopewell Middle School. Students are being taught
stream monitoring as part of their environmental science studies.
Adopt-A-Stream is an Outreach Program of the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, Watershed
Protection Branch and sponsored locally by Milton Grows Green. For
