1ST SEMESTER ORIENTATION SPRING 2010 WELCOME TO IVC NURSING PROGRAM This is a Program, not just a group of classes It is designed to prepare you for: “Nursing Boards” called NCLEX - required for licensure Practicing as a RN A career requiring lifelong learning The profession of nursing is ever changing and rarely stagnant Safety requirements for patients, communities, & nurses Nurses are at the bedside, in informatics, in research, in education, in administration, etc. A BIT ABOUT YOU… What is your personal background in healthcare? 1. Certified Nurse Assistant or Home Health Aide 2. EMT or Paramedic 3. LVN 4. Telemetry or Pharmacy Technician 5. None of the above What ever your background, this program will work with you SCREENS REQUIRED FOR THE PROGRAM Background Results www.sdnsebackground.com If any results are considered negative, make an appointment with the Program Director and begin a paper trail to explain what happened, how you have corrected it, and your current status. Healthcare facilities will not allow students with a record of violence to practice Drug Screen www.questdiagnostics.com/appointments “Dilute” urine specimens may not be accepted If results positive for any drug, make an appointment with the Program Director PHYSICAL EXAM Call the Student Health Center @ 355-6310 for appt. Bring immunization record. If necessary, ck with Public Health If unable to provide, titers may be necessary . MMR and TD is free at the Student Health Center if needed. Hepatitis B & Varicella are recommended and available at the Public Health Department for a cost. The TB skin test (PPD) requires a follow-up within 48-72 hours. If you tested positive on a TB skin test in the past, bring a recent chest x-ray report or ask the nurse to schedule you for one. Treat all with respect or it will not be there for you to learn. NO cell phones, cameras, food, or drinks allowed.
