Introduction to RCE PENANG
RCE Penang is one of the first seven pioneering Regional Centres of Expertise
on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE) launched in Nagoya in 2005.
Specific roles and objectives :

Develop and promote sustainable development
training opportunities for school teachers,
teacher educators and school administrators;
Develop and ESD strategy guide for local
authorities;
Increase volunteer opportunities around
sustainable development;
Coordinate the compilation of current ESD
practices across Penang and neighbouring states
in order to share and generate regional ESD good
practices; and
Cultivate sustainable development competencies
in the existing workforce.

RCE-GWS delivers educational
responses to these challenges via:
Transformative education
Research
Engagement
RCE-GWS identifies four major sustainability challenges for GWS:
Transitioning to a low carbon economy
Developing sustainable communities, including health,
transport and housing
Ensuring agricultural sustainability and food security
Conserving biodiversity and river health

1) VISIT TO USM BY PROF GEOFFREY SCOTT, MS JEN DOLLIN
•Hosted by USM’s DVC Academic and International affair
•Agreement to collaborate on mutual interest
2) SERIES THE BUSINESS OF SUSTAINABILITY
•Host a series of e-Seminars on the above theme between
our two RCEs and partners.
3) HOSTING THE ANNUAL YOUTH ECO SUMMIT
•In coordinating this, SOPA have proposed to pilot the first
seminar as they have state of the art VC facilities and IT
support.

Setting the CISCO teleconferencing line before the actual
date
Connection error when connecting international network
and unavailability of the reliable technical staff during the
actual date
Understanding English between both countries (different
slang and manners)
Rapporteur between the institutions

LOGISTIC
• Venue (room completed with teleconferencing
equipments) unavailable due to full bookings.
• Traffic jam in the campus and one way route due to
convocation week.

FINDING SUITABLE DATES
• Suitable dates for both rce. Eg. We had the
programme on USM’s convocation day and heavy
internet traffic.
• Awareness of different time zone and changes. Eg.
Day light saving hour in Australia.

PLAN AHEAD
1. ICT TRIAL RUN/ PILOT
- ensure all the equipment, software and reliable technical
staff are available on the actual date of teleconferencing
forum
2. ADVANCE PRESENTATION
- record the video earlier than the actual date

•Take longer to develop
•However we are very interested in exploring the possibility of the above.
