The following staff groups face risk of retirement - 22% (15.6 FTE) of GPs; 23% (7.8 FTE) of Practice Nurses; 19% (3.3 FTE) of Direct Patient Care staff; 32% (49.3 FTE) of Practice Management staff; 19% (1.2 FTE) of Apprentices. Data from a Local Yorkshire CCG Evolving Workforce Configurations The Toblerone Manoeuvre www.hee.nhs.uk Where’s the Cavalry? • Recycling existing workforce • Poaching from each other • We need urgent transformational change www.hee.nhs.uk FACT The vast majority of student nurses don’t realise that Practice Nursing exists as a career choice!! www.hee.nhs.uk The Advanced Training Practice Scheme “Grow your own” From Idea to Industrialisation to Normalisation www.hee.nhs.uk The ATP Model Goal: Every u/g student nurse to have a substantive placement in General Practice • 8 Hub Practices set up providing regional coverage • Each Hub recruits a network of spoke practices (similar to VTS model) • Hub patch to be 20+ practices • Admin funding from Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber and tariff payments to practices taking student nurses • All placements minimum of 6 weeks www.hee.nhs.uk Where are we now? • 130 Practices involved to date • Over 300 nurse placements anticipated 2014/2015 • Superb student and mentor evaluations • Strong network with quarterly steering groups and bi-annual workshops • Aftersales services – Preceptorship programmes • Facebook – dating agency www.hee.nhs.uk Activity Delivering growth in very difficult times. It ain’t easy !! www.hee.nhs.uk Key Achievements • Sustainable model capable of national roll-out • Cultural Shift – dispelled the myth that new practice nurses need post qualification secondary care experience - they don’t !! • Conversion rate – nearly 40 Nurses in GPN posts straight from qualification. Expecting significant increase. • HSJ Award – National Winner Workforce Category www.hee.nhs.uk ….to summarise • The problem is now • If General Practice doesn’t engage with this there will be no cavalry to fix our workforce crisis • Practice Nurses and HCA’s are brilliant and crucial to the future of Primary Care……….but we need loads more!! www.hee.nhs.uk ….the ask • Be relentless in getting the workforce message out there to all GP’s Practice Managers, Practice Nurse teams and CCG’s • If you don’t have an ATP type model in your area consider how to develop one.
