Dr. Fred Zar, MD
• One student said: “Dr. Zar is a quintessential
instructor, mentor, and care provider in academic
medicine. He takes a passion for medicine and
shares it with medical students in coursework
and clinic by directing one of our most clinically
relevant courses, teaching lectures in that class,
and even providing case studies for
other courses! He then meets with us again in
clinic as we take what he has taught us and
expands on it with a more hands on approach…
• He then continues to support the education of
future physicians by instructing residents on not
just the answers to problems in clinic, but how to
think about them and succeed for years to come
(regardless of your field) at highly attended
weekly case discussions. Dr. Zar's impressive
balance of numerous appointments that support
care and education goes above and beyond what
his position calls for, and I believe he deserves
this award for his selfless devotion of his
time, energy, and intelligence.”
Dr. Fred Zar, MD

Committee for selection of Humanistic M4

• His goal as the Internal Medicine residency
director is to "to train internists in the
principles of humanism and professionalism in
addition to having the necessary medical
knowledge.“
Dr. Fred Zar
• His residents have said that Dr. Zar “is the
biggest attraction to (UIC’s Internal Medicine
residency program.) He is very energetic and a
patient advocate, not to mention a walking
encyclopedia.” Also that he “is friendly and
charismatic, a good teacher.”
