• Be positive about the subject – it’s a life
qualification
• Involve them in everyday calculations such as
budgeting, costing a holiday or trip which
involves discounts or group tickets

ENGLISH
MR. N. HAMILTON
Data and Assessments
The CWA level for November is based on the creative
and analytical writing completed during The Island
transition project which they began in middle school
and have completed here.
Further assessments take place at the end of each
module on a half termly basis, culminating in a GCSE
style test just after May half term.
GCSE English Language and English
Literature
Current Exam Board AQA
The new exam specifications are still under
discussion, however, the aim is for the
majority of students to access both English
GCSE subjects.
The new exams will embrace the full new grade
range of 1-9.
YEAR 9 TRANSITION PROJECT
Constructed around an island theme, students
produced a range of creative writing at middle
school with different purposes and for different
audiences. Reading challenge homework on this
theme was set for completion over the summer.
Students have, since joining us, studied in
response to a challenging anthology of themed
fiction and non-fiction texts, producing both
analytical and creative writing. Please visit the
display and enjoy some of their most recent work.
YEAR 9 – FILM UNIT
With a view to honing their skills in preparation
for GCSE, students follow a programme of study
focusing on creative writing stimulated by a film
still of their own choosing. This involves
becoming more aware of whole text cohesion,
using a range of language devices,
experimenting with person and tense, and
ultimately, choosing their own form, audience
and purpose to write in, with real ownership of
the outcome.
YEAR 9 – THE REST OF THE COURSE
Students go on to study a contemporary
novel, excerpts from a Shakespeare play, a
challenging selection of poetry and a
range of non-fiction writing. The topics
explored in Drama lessons often dovetail
with the content of their English lessons,
which is helpful as they are taught in the
same groups.
Three Top Tips for English
• Encourage your child to read as much fiction and nonfiction as possible:
1. Ensure they are a library member.
2. Encourage them to read a newspaper regularly.
3. Don’t be put off if they’re reading on-line – the internet is
a great source of material and many contemporary writers
self publish.
• Encourage your child into good habits, such as using cover /
spell / check for errors, using Bite-size and other on-line
interactive opportunities to improve spelling, grammar and
punctuation, such as www.learnthat.org/?learn-spelling.
