Guiding Principles…
 There
are many pathways to
recovery. Recovery is:
 self-directed & empowering
 involves a personal recognition
of the need for change &
transformation
 Holistic
 Unique & impacted by cultural
beliefs & traditions. A person’s
cultural experience often
shapes the recovery path that
is right for him/her
 Exists
on a continuum of
improved health & wellness
 Emerges from hope and
gratitude
 Involves a process of healing &
self-redefinition
 Involves addressing
discrimination & transcending
shame & stigma
 Is supported by peers & allies
 Involves re-joining & rebuilding
life in the community
 Recovery is a reality
MN Adult MH Division Guiding Principles
A recovery based service system promotes
Hope. People will have a sense that
things will improve & life’s goals can
be met. Providers of mental health
services will build on a person’s
strengths & welcome peer & family
involvement.
Holistic Approach. Providers of
mental health services will
recognize the whole person:
mind, body, spirit, culture &
community. There is
Personal Choice. People will have a recognition that setbacks and
sense of empowerment & personal
successes are both parts of
responsibility. Providers will respect a life’s goal achievement.
person’s direction in their individual
service goals.
