Native
Americans
were the first
people to live
on the
continent of
North America.
In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean
blue…and landed on the shores of
North America.
http://www1.minn.net/~keithp/ships.htm
http://www1.minn.net/~keithp/
He believed
he had sailed
to India, so
he called the
native people
he found
“Indians”.

Indian tribes
lived in
different
regions
across North
America.
http://www.theodora.com/maps/united_states_map.html
Regions are large areas with common
landforms.

Plains
The Plains
region was
home to the
Sioux.
http://nativeamericanrhymes.com/desertsouthwest/southwest.htm
Southwest
The Navajo, Hopi, and Pueblo Indian
tribes lived in the Southwest region of
North America.

The Sioux
people were
nomads.
They roamed in
search of food and
better weather.

http://nmaa-ryder.si.edu/images/1985/1985.66.493_1b.jpg
Because the Sioux were a traveling tribe,
they lived in tepees that could be moved
easily.
http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/homes.html#tepee
http://inkido.indiana.edu/w310work/romac/swest.htm
A tepee is a
cone shaped
tent made of
tall poles
covered with
bark or animal
skins.
http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/GeoImages/BainCalif/cal400/indhuts.html
The Sioux also lived in lodges, or large
wooden structures covered with mud big
enough for many people.

The Southwest
tribe known as
the “Pueblo”
got their name
from the
homes in which
they lived.
http://www.kstrom.net/isk/maps/houses/pueblo.html
http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/homes.html#adobe
A pueblo is a home, or village of
homes, made from adobe.

http://www.museumofhistory.org/images/adobe-4.jpg
http://www.primitiveways.com/adobe_horno.html
Adobe is clay mixed with straw. It is
used to make strong bricks.
The Powhatan
tribe living in
the Eastern
Woodlands
built
longhouses.

http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/homes.html
A longhouse is

In order for all
the Indians in a
tribe to survive,
they had to
work together
and by
themselves.
http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/woodland2.html
Every tribe
member had a
specific job or
occupation that
was necessary
for survival.
http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/plains.html
The Plains Indians were hunters,
fighters, and farmers.
The Indians
living in the
southwest
region were
also hunters
and farmers.

traveled far from
their village.
Sometimes, they
were forced to
hunt for food in
other areas or
find a new place
to live.
