GALATIANS BIBLE STUDY
GALATIANS 3:15-17
WHAT WE CANNOT ATTAIN…WE MUST
The apologetic of attainment.
“So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the
man of faith.” Vs. 9. That’s the point!
We’ve spent time talking about the “Promise” and what the NT
reveals it to be. Paul wants us (The Galatians) to know what it is.
Our text (NIV): “Brothers and sisters, let me take an example
from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a
human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this
case. The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.
Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people,
but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.
What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does
not set aside the covenant previously established by God and
thus do away with the promise.”

Reviewing the impetus of the message. Justification- The gift of God’s
grace. How many have done what the Galatians were doing?
How could anyone (especially a Jew) forget what Paul’s teaching?
Explaining perhaps part of the emphasis in 1st Century Jewish culture
on Moses at the time of Jesus and later of Paul:
The intertestamental period. ~430 B.C. – J.C. Lots of history.
14 Apocryphal books.
Greek culture has history. Oldest dialect is Linear B (13th B.C.)
Classical Greek (8th ~ 4th B.C.) Homer, old Athenian philosophers.
470 B.C. Socrates, then Plato/Aristotle/Alexander the Great. Doric,
Aeolic, Ionic Greek (Attic (an Ionic branch) was Alexander’s). As
Attic spread, Koiné began. Koiné or “Common” Greek is the
language of the New Testament.
The temple built by Solomon and rebuilt by Zerubbabel was
desecrated.
The Maccabean struggle. Hanukkah comes from this.
A lot of history. Perhaps through time and the struggles we can see
how the promise of the foundation was a bit obscured until the NT.

“Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from

human covenant that has been duly established, so it
is in this case.”
Oh, to be called a brother or a sister!
If it is a promised gift then it cannot later be a
promise earned. God gave it as a gift. Sure Abraham
did things, but the Bible never bases the promise on
any of them.
Sola Gratia!
Why Abram?
Why us?

HEBREWS 6:13-20
“When God made his promise to
Abraham, since there was no one
greater for him to swear by, he swore by
himself, saying, “I will surely bless you
and give you many descendants.” And so
after waiting patiently, Abraham received
what was promised. People swear by
someone greater than themselves, and
the oath confirms what is said and puts
an end to all argument. Because God
wanted to make the unchanging nature
of his purpose very clear to the heirs of
what was promised, he confirmed it with
an oath. God did this so that, by two
unchangeable things in which it is
impossible for God to lie, we who have
fled to take hold of the hope set before
us may be greatly encouraged. We have
this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm
and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary
behind the curtain, where our
forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our
behalf. He has become a high priest
forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

What Paul’s saying in this
portion is that Moses’ law
and obedience to it
Jesus
cannot be the fulfillment
or the fulfilling of the
promise.

THE SO WHAT
I can’t wait to tie this all together with you!
You are an heir of the kingdom of God through Jesus Christ.
You are a brother or sister of a family that consists of an
untold host.
You will one day look on God because of His grace toward you!
Does this not make you differ from many around you?
How old are you? I’m about 7 years old.
Hebrews 2:1-3: “Therefore we must give the more earnest
heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if the
word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every
transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how
shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at
the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed
to us by those who heard Him.”
In the words of our generation, “Represent!”
