Ann’s Life
• Parents were Russian Jewish immigrants
• Esther Pauline Friedman Lederer
• Had an identical twin- Pauline Esther Friedman
Phillips
• Grew up in Sioux City, Iowa
• Attended Central High where she and her sister
were refused admission to an all-girls club because
of their religion
• Married at 21 to Jules Lederer
• March 1940 gave birth to Margo Lederer
• Divorced in 1975
• Died from multiple myeloma in June 2002
Ann’s Career
• Moved to Chicago and begun writing for the Sun
Times
• Best known for writing the famous syndicated
advice column "Ann Landers“
• Her writing style was direct, but often witty and
sometimes acerbic
• 1955 won a contest to take over the column, ended
up the owner of the copyright
• Wrote for the Morningside College newspaper
• Chose not to have a different writer take over her
column after her death
• Sister wrote the “Dear Abby” column as Abigail Van
Buren
• Acted as a counsel and advocate
• In 1950s encouraged women to stay at home, but
by the 1970s urged women to find jobs
• The twins weren’t on speaking terms by 1958
when LIFE magazine illustrated how strained
their relationship was
• Wrote two books- Since You Ask Me and
Teenagers and Sex
