What is Windows 8

An operating system is a software program that
controls all hardware and application software on the
computer.



Users use the GUI to point and click to perform tasks
Hardware consists of components and devices that must
talk to each other and the user
Applications software enables users to do their work

What is Windows 8

Four editions:




Windows 8 – intended for home users
Windows 8 Pro – intended for business and power users
Windows 8 Enterprise – intended for business users
within a corporate network environment
Windows RT – only runs on tablets with an ARM CPU

Logging into Windows 8

Security is enabled by default


Lock screen
Log in using your login ID (user profile) and password

Password is the same as for your Microsoft account, if you are
using it as your logon ID






Tap: single short tap on screen
Swipe: slide finger up from bottom of screen
Tug: touch object, then short downward swipe
Drag: touch object, then slide to new location
Zoom: two fingers on screen, then spread





Charms menu: swipe from right edge of screen to
the left
Switch to last used app: swipe from left edge to
middle of screen
Recently used app list: swipe from left edge, then
back to left edge of screen
Close app: drag the app down to bottom of screen

Using a Pointing Device

Using a mouse or the touchpad



Single click: point at object on the screen, then click left
mouse button once
Right-click: point at object on the screen, then click right
mouse button once
Double-click: point at object on the screen, then click the
left mouse button twice quickly

Using the Keyboard

Many features can be activated using the keyboard



key to display the Start screen
key to cancel an action
key to move to the next field in a dialog box

Using the Scroll Bar



Appears automatically if there is more to display than space
available on the screen
Can be horizontal or vertical
Consists of:



Arrow buttons at each end
Scroll box
Scroll area

Charms Menu



Can be used anywhere in Windows
Displayed at right side of screen
Activated by:



Swipe from right edge of the screen
Point mouse at the top right or bottom right corner of
the screen
Press Windows ( )+ on the keyboard

Start Charm


Swaps your current app with the Start screen
Examples:


If you are currently in an app, activating this charm will
display the Start screen.
If you are at the Start screen, activating this charm will
redisplay your most recent app.

Search Charm

Behaves one of two ways:



Searches for data within the current app, if
that app is listed in the Search pane
Searches from the Apps category if current
app is not listed in the Search pane
Example: if the Mail app is running, you
can search for an email message
containing a word or phrase

Share Charm

Shares content currently displayed on
screen with others


e.g. share a photo with friends by email or upload to
Facebook
This charm will only work while
running an app – will not

Using Start Screen Apps


Your system is usable right out of box - includes a
set of apps on the Start screen
Apps are designed for touch screens - tiles are:



Big and easy to select
Activate by touching once
When an app is launched, it takes the entire screen

All other apps are in the background

Live Tiles

Display news headlines or pictures or both





Tiles can be moved
Other tiles below move to fill the vacant spot, moving
in this direction:

To create a new group, move tile to a blank area at

Tile groups can be named
Some tiles can be made smaller or larger

Shutting Down / Restarting

Shut down PC on a regular basis:





Ensure data is saved
Conserve electricity
Ensure Windows updates are applied
Extends life of hard drive
Restart is same as Shut down, but
restarts the PC

