2 The Regional Transportation Challenge for Bexar County Population Growth: 1.42 million residents (year 2000) 2.39 million residents (year 2030) 1 million new residents 68 percent growth Economic Growth: Employment – 75 percent growth (2030) Toyota Plant and 21 on-site suppliers Expanding/high growth sectors: Biotechnology Health services Financial Higher education “Providing Reliable Choices to Keep the Region Moving” 3 The Regional Transportation Challenge for Bexar County International Trade: 50 percent of export/import traffic with Mexico flows through region NAFTA-related traffic growing exponentially IH 35 truck traffic growing 15 percent/year NAFTA-related rail traffic growing 6 percent annually Freight rail traffic in region expected to double by 2025 Military: Base Realignment and Closures (BRAC) net gain of 4,000 military employees Fort Sam Houston America’s hub for joint enlisted medical training 13-14,000 new workers and students 5,000 families $ 2 billion in new construction “Providing Reliable Choices to Keep the Region Moving” 4 The Regional Transportation Challenge for Bexar County Regional Trade Corridors/Hurricane Routes: San Antonio served as a mass evacuation center (Houston, New Orleans, Gulf Coast) during recent hurricane season Regional corridors – IH 10, IH 37, and US 281 proved inadequate for the demand These are also important regional trade and statewide connectivity corridors. “Providing Reliable Choices to Keep the Region Moving” 5 Solutions Today Since 2003, the Bexar County region has taken advantage of a number of “new tools” to help accelerate transportation projects in this region: • Regional Mobility Authorities • Advanced Transportation District • Pass Through Financing • Texas Mobility Fund • Proposition 14 Bonding
