Schools have two opportunities to assess students on NCLB assessments. Schools may assess a student no more than once in a given semester. 19 State Assessments – OTL Mathematics & Reading (Cont.) Students taking an NCLB assessment as a 9th or 10th grader will have their scores banked until they become 11th graders. Once a student scores proficient, he is “complete” and is not eligible for a second test. The building where a student scores proficient retains the score even if the student moves. 20 State Assessments – OTL Mathematics & Reading (Cont.) Once a student scores non-proficient twice in a given school, he is “complete” and is not eligible for additional opportunities regardless of whether he remains enrolled in that school or moves to another building. The building where a student scores nonproficient twice retains the non-proficient score even if the student moves. 21 State Assessments – OTL Mathematics & Reading (Cont.) When a student has banked a non- proficient score and moves to another building, the score will not be used in first building’s AYP calculation. 22 State Assessments – OTL Mathematics & Reading (Cont.) When a student has a banked a non- proficient and moves to another building, the score is dropped and the receiving school inherits two new opportunities to test. If the student is an 11th grader and is not tested in the receiving school, it will count against their participation rate. 23 State Assessments – OTL Mathematics & Reading (Cont.) The above OTL scoring procedures negate the need for Special Coding Circumstances (SC codes) for 9th and 10th grade students. When a student with a banked nonproficient score remains in the original building and is not tested a second time, the banked score is counted for both AYP and participation. 24 State Assessments – OTL Mathematics & Reading (Cont.) When an exited student returns to the original building after 9/20 and has a non-proficient banked score, the nonproficient score counts for participation only. 25 State Assessments – OTL Mathematics & Reading (Cont.) If a student tests once as non-proficient and is included in an AYP cohort as an 11th grader, then gets reclassified the following year, the student is regarded as complete even though the student tested only once and did not score proficient. 26 State Assessments – 2008 Math General Assessment Three test sessions, 2 allowing calculator and 1 non-calculator session. All multiple-choice questions. Twelve to fifteen indicators assessed per grade level. Four to eight items per indicator. Accommodations allowed are in the accommodations Manual at: http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=420 27 State Assessments – 2008 Math (Cont.) KAMM and Alternate The sum of KAMM and Alternate students classified as “Meets Standards” or higher at the district/building level must not exceed 3%. Only 1% of district students may be classified as meet standards or higher using an alternate assessment. 28 State Assessments – 2008 Math (Cont.) KAMM Math Assessment will be reorganized this year based on the April 2007 release of the final NCLB 2% Regulations. The revised KAMM Math Assessment will mirror the organization of the current Kansas General Math Assessment in the following way. 29 State Assessments – 2008 Math (Cont.) The KAMM Math Assessment will be organized into three sections. The use of calculators will be allowed in two sections. The third section will not allow calculator use. 30 State Assessments – 2008 Math (Cont.) On the non-calculator portion, there are items for which a calculator would not be necessarily helpful (e.g. recognizing shapes, charts and graphs, time, transformations, patterns etc.). If any student uses a calculator on a non- calculator portion of the assessment, it will invalidate the test and the student will be counted as though he/she did not participate. 31 State Assessments – 2008 Math (Cont.) Parental consent is required for IEP revisions regarding these state assessment accommodations unless the IEP includes the statement below which was shared last year with the field. The school may obtain consent by holding an IEP meeting or by using the IEP amendment form available online at www.kansped.org. If the school wishes to amend the IEP rather than hold an IEP meeting, the parent may still request an IEP meeting to discuss these changes if desired. Of course, parents also have a right to refuse consent for the recommended revisions. 32 State Assessments – 2008 Math (Cont.) Statement for IEPs and 504 plans relating to state assessment accommodations: This (These) accommodation(s) will be available for use on the state assessment unless the U.S. Department of Education Guidelines indicates that scores for students receiving these accommodations on state assessments will not count toward participation or meeting state standards. 33 State Assessments – 2008 Science Assessed annually beginning in 2007- 08 Students assessed at Grades 4, 7, and once in high school Cut scores will be set in Summer, 2008 Science scores will be used in QPA calculations Science scores will not be used in AYP calculations at this time 34 State Assessments – 2008 Science (cont.) All questions are multiple choice Two questions per indicator Number of tested indications Grade 4 = 22 Grade 7 = 30 High school = 30 35 State Assessments – 2008 Science (cont.) Cohort group for science is Grade 11 All juniors must take both halves of the test in Spring, 2008 Data used to set cut scores Freshmen and sophomores may also take assessment so that scores may be banked. Those data will not be used to set cut scores. Opportunity to Learn without retesting will be operational in 2008-2009 37 State Assessments – 2008 History/Government Assessed in 2007-2008 and again in 2009-2010 Students assessed at Grades 6, 8, and once in high school Cut scores set in Summer, 2008 Scores are not used for AYP, but they are used for QPA. 38 State Assessments – 2008 History/Government (cont.) All questions are multiple-choice. Two items per indicator will be assessed Number of tested indicators -- grade 6 = 24 -- grade 8 = 27 -- high school = 27 39 State Assessments – 2008 History/Government (cont.) Cohort group for history/government Grade 11 in 2007-2008 so that cut scores may be set Grade 12 beginning in 2009-2010 Opportunity to Learn without the opportunity to retest will be operational beginning 09/10 for grades 9, 10, and 11. Two or more forms will be available for general education and one form will be available for KAMM Paper/pencil and KCA will be available. 40 State Assessments – 2008 History/Government (cont.) The Kansas Career Pipeline (KCP) is a non-profit Kansas organization with the mission of engaging students in using the state’s educational system to reach their career and life goals. It does this by: Providing a web based program to assist students discover the career choices most aligned with their personal interests and aptitudes Linking students to the educational pathways and institutions that will prepare them for this future Connecting students with workplace resources that lead to their goals, including career e-mentors, summer jobs, scholarships, and long term employment. 50 Kansas Career Pipeline (cont.) The pipeline operates in the following manner. After logging on to a classroom or other computer, participants will be directed by a “virtual” guide to take a personal survey. The “guide” leads them through a series of questions designed to elicit participant’s interests and aptitudes. This survey is adapted to the age levels of the participants and offers age appropriate questions. 51 Kansas Career Pipeline (cont.) After completing the survey, a list of most likely career options is given. These options are aligned with the 16 career clusters used by the Department of Labor and State of Kansas Career and Technical Education programs. The offering of careers includes video vignettes or stories about what those careers are and what they look like. These vignettes, while professionally produced, will contain “actors” provided by Kansas. 52 KSDE Website http://www.ksde.org/ How to get to the mathematics page Go to http://www.ksde.org/ Go to “Educators” Go to “Assessments” Go to “Math Assessments” OR Go to “Educators” Go to “Standards” Go to “Mathematics” 53 KSDE Website http://www.ksde.org/ Mathematics Home Page http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=1719 Mathematics Assessment http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=156 Math Standards http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=141 Mathematics Requirements http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=1982 Mathematics/Science Grant Program (MSP) http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=1803 54 KSDE Website http://www.ksde.org/ Mathematics Home Page Mathematics Requirements Mathematics / Science Grant Program (MSP) Mathematics Teachers Content/Confidence Survey Mathematics Flip Charts Research Based Support for Mathematics Teacher Scientifically Based Research Resource List 55 KSDE Website http://www.ksde.org/ Mathematics Flip Charts Standard/Benchmark/Indicator Explanation of Indicator Instructional Example Item Specification Assessment Item Example 56 KSDE Website http://www.ksde.org/ Mathematics Assessment (page) Mathematics Assessment Fact Sheet Kansas Mathematics and Reading General Assessments: Examiner's Manual Assessment Framework KAMM Assessment Framework High School Formula Sheet Test Specifications Allowable Manipulatives for Mathematics Assessment 57 KSDE Website http://www.ksde.org/ Mathematics Requirements (page) Graduation Requirement for Classes from 2009 on Three units of mathematics, including algebraic and geometric concepts.
