Transcript Genesis, chapter 3 - Our Savior's, Eyota

Genesis, chapter 3

NIV Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was
more crafty than any of the wild animals
the LORD God had made. He said to the
woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not
eat from any tree in the garden'?"
Satan can quote Scripture?



Satan can quote the Word of God. It is
his evil craft to draw people away from
God’s Word and the faith given therein.
Satan quoted God’s Word in the
Temptations of Christ.
Many antichrists have arisen in the Name
of Christ, twisting God’s Word as they
themselves reflect the image of the devil.
Anti-Christ Conformity
Revelation 13:11
Then I saw another beast, coming
out of the earth. He had two horns
like a lamb, but he spoke like a
dragon.
The Dragon

In the Book of Revelation, there are those
who want to be seen as Christian in the
authority of the Lamb’s Word and
Sacraments (as seen with the symbolic
horns) but they speak the words of Satan
(i.e. pluralism, evolution, abortion,
homosexuality, synergism, etc.).
Crafty


1 Samuel 23:22 Go and make further
preparation. Find out where David usually
goes and who has seen him there. They
tell me he is very crafty.
Arum is the word for crafty. It is used in
both a positive and negative sense in the
Scriptures.
Crafty


We do the same thing.
Crafty? In the Biblical sense, this means
someone thoroughly plans out objectives
to achieve an ultimate purpose. Often,
the ultimate goal or the larger cohesion of
momentary objectives are hidden to those
around them.
Crafty


The neat thing about the term is that it is
the same word for “naked”.
We know that Adam and Eve did not have
clothes in their shame. But the use of the
word arum additionally references shame,
loss of glory, and the imprint of the image
of the crafty snake.
Crafty


So Adam and Eve were both ARUM
(naked) and also bore the image of
scheming underneath (hiding real life
objectives in sin).
Instead of bearing the IMAGE of God, they
will bear IMAGE of the serpent, ARUM.
Arum – Crafty, Naked

Paronomasia (pun), is a form of word play
which suggests two or more meanings, by
exploiting multiple meanings of words, or
of similar-sounding words, for an intended
humorous or rhetorical effect.
What type of glory will be lost?


Matthew 13:43 Then the righteous
will shine like the sun in the kingdom
of their Father. He who has ears, let
him hear.
1 John 3:2 We know that when he
appears, we shall be like him, for we
shall see him as he is.
The Term for Devil


Here the term is serpent.
Moses wrote the first five books listed in
our Bible (circa 1448 BC), but Job’s
account begin 400 years later in a likely
oral tradition and then was written down.
In Job, the term for the devil is SATAN –
One who opposes. This fits well with the
ENMITY between Satan’s seed and Eve’s
seed. Satan opposes God and His
children.
The Term for Devil




In the New Testament, the term for the
devil is often DIABOLOS.
DIA – Through.
BOLOS – Cast.
The imagery is one who casts spears (or
such) at Christians in temptations and
ideas.
Paul



Paul, the Apostle, was well aware of the
imagery of the term Diabolos.
We are protected by wrong thoughts and
ideas thrown our way for sake of our
FAITH to rejoice in and to acknowledge
our Lord’s presence and care.
Ephesians 6:16 In addition to all this,
take up the shield of faith, with
which you can extinguish all the
flaming arrows of the evil one.
Genesis, chapter 3

2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may
eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3
but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit
from the tree that is in the middle of the
garden, and you must not touch it, or you
will die.'“
Did Adam and Eve die when
they ate it?




Yes.
Spiritually, they died in losing a
relationship with the LORD.
Physically, they died in losing glory.
Cut a tree limb off and it is dead from the
tree, even though the actually process of
decay looks slow.


Romans 8:21 The creation itself will
be liberated from its bondage to
decay and brought into the glorious
freedom of the children of God.
As we were to be God’s image to creation,
creation will also suffer separation from its
intended glory in the Fall into sin.
Did Adam and Eve die when
they ate it?


When Adam and Eve ate the fruit, their
bodies were bound to death. The “ready
decay” would eventually catch up when
they breathed their last.
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin
entered the world through one man,
and death through sin, and in this
way death came to all men, because
all sinned--
Genesis, chapter 3

4 "You will not surely die," the serpent
said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that
when you eat of it your eyes will be
opened, and you will be like God, knowing
good and evil."
“As God”



The “alluring bait” is to replace God.
BUT… only God can be God to do His job.
The thought is that God must be pushed
out of the picture. Think how the cross
shows the full ugliness of this sin to have
life on our own terms with God put in His
place and out of the way.
The Tree of the Knowledge of
Good and Evil

The untouched fruit gave glory to God.
Mankind did not need to personally
experience EVIL along with GOOD.

In our lives, we can trust others to know
what is good and evil without going
through the experience. This is an aspect
of FAITH.
KNOWLEDGE - YODEH



Mankind could know about GOOD and
EVIL without personally going through it
FIRST for themselves.
The knowledge of experience and intimacy
is YODEH.
Rejoicing in the Lord’s presence and care,
His children could know what GOOD /
EVIL in whole of life was without
experiencing it first.
KNOWLEDGE OF FAMILIARITY YODEH



I know a radial arm saw can cut my
fingers off without experiencing it.
I can know the ER is potentially good for
me without having been there.
It’s interesting how variant forms of
YODEH pop up from time to time.
YADA. YADA. YADA.

Jerry Seinfeld denies YADA means
anything. But his Jewish heritage
probably picked up on YADA as personal
experience.
Yoda

George Lucas would have been familiar
with the Hebrew scriptures growing up.
Yoda

George Lucas’ character is meant to
embody practical wisdom and experience.



God created children,
not puppets.
The untouched fruit
gave witness that
mankind wanted God
to be their God.
Pinocchio fits really
well into this all to
explain it.



He had free will, but
needed to trust those
who cared for him
about good and evil.
But poor Pinocchio
didn’t trust them.
He had to learn what
it felt like to
personally experience
evil.

Individuals and society feel that they can
be their own gods, but sin eventually
leads to hurt, shame, and death.
Examples today.
The CDC says half of Americans can expect
to get cancer causing HPV. One third of all
children are born to single parents that
cause a whole host of problems. The sexual
revolution brought enslavement and death.



TALKING
SERPENTS???
Mankind had a
very unique glory
in the pre-fallen
world that we
cannot presently
imagine.

In C.S. Lewis’ Prince
Caspian novel, when
mankind becomes
corrupt the
communion with
nature breaks down.
His fantastical novels
may have reflected
his own belief of a
glory with nature that
we cannot begin to
fathom but were
meant to have.
Genesis, chapter 3


6 When the woman saw that the fruit of
the tree was good for food and pleasing
to the eye, and also desirable for gaining
wisdom, she took some and ate it. She
also gave some to her husband, who was
with her, and he ate it.
The Hebrew preposition AM means very close
proximity. Interesting enough, the preposition is
often used to described intimacy in marriage. It
is also the preposition that composes the name
EMM-ANU-EL. Adam was with her and was
silent. This was his sin.
All Senses Employed –
Even the Spiritual
1.
Hearing
2.
Touch.
3 and 4. Taste – Mouth and smell.
5.
Sight.
6.
Understanding of things beyond our
immediate understanding.
Three Trees in the Bible



Genesis: Tree has spiritual and eternal
ramifications in its fruit.
Gospels: The horrific tree of the cross has
spiritual and eternal ramifications in its
fruit. The Lord’s Supper shares that
glorious fruit.
Revelation: The Tree of Life has spiritual
and eternal ramifications in its fruit.
Genesis, chapter 3


7 Then the eyes of both of them were
opened, and they realized they were
naked; so they sewed fig leaves together
and made coverings for themselves.
The Fall is immediate. I wonder if they
had bodies shining like the sun that grew
dim immediately.
Genesis, chapter 3

They knew by experience (Yodeh) evili
and nakedness. They knew the shame of
evil by personally experience.
Evil Exists all around us
Evil is indifference to the
true grief caused others.
 Creature and inanimate
forces can be evil.
 Adam and Evil were
indifferent to the grief
caused the Lord.
 The cross confronts us
with this indifference to
the grief caused the Lord
head on when the true
nature of evil becomes
incarnate towards God.
Three Types of Evil
1.
Living in a Fallen world. War. Famine.
Earthquakes. Accidents.
2. Personal Actions. Speeding tickets.
Slothfulness. Immorality.
3. Persecution. The cross is endured for the
sake of the Lord.
The THIRD TYPE IS THE HOLY SUFFERING
AND THE LORD IS FAITHFUL TO BLESS THE
CROSSES AS HE WOULD HIS OWN.
The Coverings



Here comes the Gospel.
Adam and Eve used fig leaves, God will
supply leather. It is such a better
covering.
If you were to ride a Harley across the
country, what is the better outfit – fig
leaves or good old leather.
The Coverings


The covering shows the Lord can do so
much better to cover our shame and to
provide for us. He will do so in “the
Christ” of His very self.
In fact, in a creation where creature knew
no death, an animal (or animals) likely
died to provide the leather. God redeems
the shame of death through death
(GODLY SACRIFICE), in order to display
His love. Oh, how this looks forward to
the cross.
The Power of Confession


We cannot rely on our own works (in part
or in whole) to cover up our sin.
We are most glorious when we do not
attempt the idolatry to cover up our own
sin but rely fully upon the Lord for His
mercy.
Genesis, chapter 3


8 Then the man and his wife heard the
sound of the LORD God as he was walking
in the garden in the cool of the day, and
they hid from the LORD God among the
trees of the garden.
Adam and Eve hid themselves from each other
and God denying they were made for each other
and God.
God with a Body in Genesis



Adam and Eve walked with the Lord. You
need a body for that. Jesus is God in the
flesh to save us from our sin at the
appointed time, and Genesis shows that
Yaweh is revealed in the body.
Abraham ate and drank with Yaweh and
His angels.
Jacob saw Yaweh atop the steps and then
wrestled with Him.
Genesis, chapter 3

9 But the LORD God called to the man,
"Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I
heard you in the garden, and I was afraid
because I was naked; so I hid." 11 And he
said, "Who told you that you were naked?
Have you eaten from the tree that I
commanded you not to eat from?"
Genesis, chapter 3



God knows the situation fully.
He allows mankind to speak the answers
out loud to talk through the situation. In
counseling, talking through griefs is
powerfully effective. It is part of Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy – “Evil has affected
me, it is not part of whom I want to be.”
Here is the first opportunity for confession
and absolution.
Genesis, chapter 3



Adam and Eve blow this first chance for
confession and absolution. AGAIN, we see the
power of the WORD. Reflect on this
COMMUNICATIVE WORD present in the previous
two chapters.
Psalm 130:4 is one of the most complex
theological verses and so, of course, LSB sticks it
right at the beginning of a church service in the
hymnal.
NIV Psalm 130:4 But with you there is
forgiveness; therefore you are feared.
Psalm 130:3 If you, O LORD, kept a record
of sins, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with
you there is forgiveness; therefore you are
feared.
For the FACT that the Lord desires to
forgive, we can approach the Lord again in
reverence and boldness given by knowledge
of His desire for mercy.
-Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach
the throne of grace with confidence, so
that we may receive mercy and find
grace to help us in our time of need.
Genesis, chapter 3

Adam will give the wrong answer and then
God will promise the salvation in the seed
of Eve. This is important to know. We
can confess our sin and rely upon His
mercy. We need not blame others or
cover up our sin.
Genesis, chapter 3

In the Garden, the Lord immediately
promises grace so that every person who
reads and hears this account might know
the opportunity available in confession
and absolution.
Genesis, chapter 3

12 The man said, "The woman you put
here with me-- she gave me some fruit
from the tree, and I ate it." 13 Then the
LORD God said to the woman, "What is
this you have done?" The woman said,
"The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
Finger Pointing

She made me do it.

The devil made me do it.
Genesis, chapter 3

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent,
"Because you have done this, "Cursed are
you above all the livestock and all the wild
animals! You will crawl on your belly and
you will eat dust all the days of your life.
Just


Satan wanted mankind without the Lord’s
sustaining love and care, this is what he
will receive forever.
Mankind is dust without the Lord’s
sustaining love and care. Dust is Satan’s
eternal feast. And as the dust of this
earth will pass away, Satan will pass away
with it.
Genesis, chapter 3


15 And I will put enmity between you and
the woman, and between your offspring
and hers; he will crush your head, and you
will strike his heel.“
Eve’s child from her offspring will crush
the power of Satan while He Himself
receives Satan’s deadly venom of sin.
Enmity


This is why the term SATAN best describes
Satan. He opposes.
The Gospel is that Eve’s true children need
not to be slaves to Satan’s desires. They
can receive the Lord’s promise to oppose
his lies. Satan’s headship is crushed so
that it does not reign over the true Seed
those in Him (descendants of faith).
What are the physical AND
SPIRITUAL realities of this
prophecy?
The CROSS


SPIRITUAL – Satan’s headship is crushed.
Christ bears our sins – His venom.
PHYSICAL – Jesus died on the cross.
Genesis, chapter 3




From this moment on, the whole of the Old Testament
looks forward to the person, nature, and work of the
Messiah.
Psalm 22. One is crucified for the sins of all so that
generations to come might hear the one generation of
Apostles. Keep in mind crucifixion would not be
invented for a few centuries to come when this was
written and sung.
Isaiah 53. The Servant dies for the sins of all.
Daniel 9:26. After the sixty-two 'sevens,' the Anointed
One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of
the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the
sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will
continue until the end, and desolations have been
decreed.
So now we have bookends to
the true underlying purpose of
this first book of the Bible.

Genesis 49:10 The scepter will not
depart from Judah, nor the ruler's
staff from between his feet, until he
comes to whom it belongs and the
obedience of the nations is his.
The SEED of Genesis

Dies with Satan’s venom.

Reigns over all the earth.

This can only be understand in life and
person of Jesus Christ.

Luke 24:27 And beginning with
Moses and all the Prophets, he
explained to them what was said in
all the Scriptures concerning himself.
Genesis, chapter 3


16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly
increase your pains in childbearing; with
pain you will give birth to children. Your
desire will be for your husband, and he will
rule over you.“
The whole context of Genesis is needed up to this point.
This is not a mandate for man to rule over woman.
What we see is that Adam’s primary joy to serve and
provide is now gone. Men will seek control versus joyfilled service to pour out his best for his wife as the Lord
does for His Bride, His people (Ephesians 5:25).
Genesis, chapter 3


Bearing and rearing children becomes
burdensome, worrisome, and dangerous.
This is not the original design of absolute
joy 24-7.
Eve and Adam will be in conflict with each
other for power within in the home. This
is now the norm, not the exception.
Life in the World to Come

Raising children becomes absolute joy
again.
Isaiah 65:23 They will not toil in vain or
bear children doomed to misfortune; for
they will be a people blessed by the LORD,
they and their descendants with them.
Genesis, chapter 3


17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to
your wife and ate from the tree about which I
commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,'
"Cursed is the ground because of you; through
painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your
life.
Adam will have nothing lasting in his own
personal labors on this earth.
Genesis, chapter 3


18 It will produce thorns and thistles for
you, and you will eat the plants of the
field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will
eat your food until you return to the
ground, since from it you were taken; for
dust you are and to dust you will return."
All is in corruption from its original design.


The Great Lakes were
more abundant before
the lamprey. This
species runs amuck
and ruins something
that was very very
good.
Creation is no longer in
harmony. Some
species run amuck in
unintended purposes.
Things are corrupted from
original purpose
While plants were consumed,
death for the creature was a
foreign notion.

Think of the PANDA. If it were not
existent today, we might believe the
remains indicate that it should be a
carnivore. In fact, the PANDA is a strict
HERBIVORE. We see species after the
fact of sin and centuries after they have
adapted to a fallen world. Evolution
claims death is needed and natural.


Isaiah 11:6 The wolf will live with
the lamb, the leopard will lie down
with the goat, the calf and the lion
and the yearling together; and a little
child will lead them.
Isaiah 65:25 The wolf and the lamb
will feed together, and the lion will
eat straw like the ox, but dust will be
the serpent's food. They will neither
harm nor destroy on all my holy
mountain," says the LORD.
Adam’s Curse / Tower of Babel


God opposes efforts for a lasting and
eternal name on this side of heaven.
Luke 16:9 I tell you, use worldly
wealth to gain friends for yourselves,
so that when it is gone, you will be
welcomed into eternal dwellings.
Genesis, chapter 3


20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she
would become the mother of all the living.
21 The LORD God made garments of skin
for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
The name is Ha-wah which means BIRTH.
Genesis, chapter 3


The discourse begins with the Promised
Savior and ends with the shedding of
blood.
An animal died to cover their shame. The
animal received what they deserved.
Genesis, chapter 3



The Sacrifice of Eden.
Again, God’s efforts to clothe them were
infinitely better than their own (leather vs.
fig leaves).
Confession. The animal received what
they deserved – death. “You will die.”
Genesis, chapter 3


22 And the LORD God said, "The man has
now become like one of us, knowing good
and evil. He must not be allowed to reach
out his hand and take also from the tree of
life and eat, and live forever."
Who are the US?
The KNOWLEDGE means
experience.


To be like GOD – Control, care.
NIV Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let us
make man in our image, in our likeness,
and let them rule over the fish of the sea
and the birds of the air, over the livestock,
over all the earth, and over all the
creatures that move along the ground."
Image of the “US” God


This is a dim reflection but helps to
explain it. God is FATHER, SON, HOLY
SPIRIT.
You can be mother, daughter, scuba diver,
and computer tech gal. There aren’t four
of you but one. We bear God’s image. IN
each person of the Trinity, God is known
with special attributes and tasks in each
one.



Genesis 11:7 Come, let us go down and
confuse their language so they will not
understand each other.
This let us has confused Rabbi’s for
centuries. Only in understanding the
persons of the Triune God does this make
sense.
On in the TRINITY is mankind fully
reconciled with God and each other – As
seen on Pentecost.


Clearly, we see references to the TRINITY.
Ephesians 1:17 I keep asking that
the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
glorious Father, may give you the
Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so
that you may know him better.
Does Yodeh apply to God!



A loving parent can tell a child what is
right and wrong without personally
engaging in wrongs and doing evil himself
or herself.
God knew what was best.
Adam and Eve have now taken that job
upon themselves.
Genesis, chapter 3



Adam and Eve would need to die
temporally, but not eternally.
Their temporal death would allow them to
receive their intended eternal life of glory
once more.
God does not allow them to eat from the
TREE OF LIFE because they would receive
the promise to live eternally in fallen
bodies inclined to sin.
Genesis, chapter 3

23 So the LORD God banished him from
the Garden of Eden to work the ground
from which he had been taken. 24 After he
drove the man out, he placed on the east
side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a
flaming sword flashing back and forth to
guard the way to the tree of life.
Genesis, chapter 3


Think of other angel events, especially in
the New Testament.
At the birth and resurrection of Christ,
think how the angels invite people to
know the Lord face to face again.
Genesis, chapter 3



Cherubim. The cherubim are models of
worship. There should be holy awe to be
in the presence of the Lord.
Seraphim. From their brief occurrence in
Scripture, they are quick to teach, often
with symbolism.
But this interpreted difference might be
overstretching.
Genesis

The Bible begins:




Knowing the Lord in perfect fellowship.
Knowing the angels face to face.
Having the invitation to eat from the tree of
life to live forever.
An angel elevates self over God.
When we come to Revelation

The Bible comes full circle:





Knowing the Lord in perfect fellowship.
Knowing the angels face to face.
Knowing the heavens and earth restored to
glory.
Having the invitation to eat from the tree of
life to live forever.
An angel shows himself as a servant to God
and man.

Revelation 22:9 But he said to me,
"Do not do it! I am a fellow servant
with you and with your brothers the
prophets and of all who keep the
words of this book. Worship God!"
We live in the in-between
Can we sin all over in heaven?



The promise is no.
The hope of the resurrection includes the
promise that there will be no more
allurements to sin.
We will naturally share God’s griefs and
joys in glorious communion. Grieving God
again would be painful to us, like grieving
a loving grandpa or hitting one’s thumb
with a hammer.
